  • G400 32MB DH, random freezing in 3D

I get random freezing in 3d since I installed my G400. So far it's happened in the Re-Volt demo, and in the tech demo. Screen just stops moving, with the image still on screen. Sound usually keeps playing, but eventually starts looping. Only way out is by the reset button. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work.

I don't think it's heat related. MB temp is 33C/91F. Heatsink on G400 is warm, but not hot. I've got 3 case fans, PS fan, CPU fan (ample cooling).

5.13 drivers and 1.5 bios, latest MB bios, all up to date drivers, etc. etc. Any ideas?

Here's my IRQ listing. The rest of my stuff is in my sig.

Hi Andrew. You seem to be running into a well documented problem. Try forcing AGP1X in the registry and see if that cures it for you.

Tried forcing AGP 1X with the reg hack. Still freezes. I also tried disabling 32bit Z buffer. I did check with PCIList to make sure it went to 1X. Any other suggestions? I never had a single problem with my G200...

Andrew, first, it's a bug. And according to Haig it's supposed to be fixed in a release (upcoming or the one following) of PowerDesk.
At this time there doesn't seem to be a general workaround for it. For me forcing AGP1X works, another guy found that disabling the L2 cache 'fixed' it, yet another one found a solution by reinstalling W98. You could try either of these or try to change timing in another way.

I've tried underclocking the g400, but I haven't yet tried reinstalling (i'm probably due though, haven't reinstalled win98 for almost a month ). I don't think I'll try disabling the cache though. That'd slow it down too much. Hope that fix comes out soon...

And let's hope the fix will really fix it. A nice card is pretty useless if it keeps crashing on you. Like women, I guess...

Women crash on you often, Scytale?

Maybe you could try underclocking us, or, you're right, a reinstall often helps...

                sorry, couldn't resist

But re-booting them could land you in jail.

Ooooh, that was pretty tasteless, I'd like to have that stricken from the record your honour...

Holly , as long as they relax even the nicer ones should be just fine. Underclocking really is a last resort.

Andrew, not sure what to think of your three-fingers-salute.

Underclocking and overclocking are both fundamentally important, it is the stability of the operating system that is of utmost importance.</a>
