  • Be careful !! usbsupp.exe screwed my system !!

    Hi,

aahhhem I still got a PROBLEM. After installing "usbsupp.exe" (please refer to my last topic) everything ran fine and I played Colin McRae and Star Wars Racer for a few hours.
Then I shut the system down and went out eating. After I came back and turned the sys on, I nearly dropped dead. Windows did not come up and I needed to go into "safe mode" (I don`t know the exact english expression).
At first I only changed the display adapter ito a standard PCI graphics adapter and booted back in "normal-mode". As I tried to reinstall the 5.13 drivers everything screwed up again. So went back into "safe-mode" and got back to the standard PCI graphics adapter * AND * deinstalled the USB Supplement to ORS2. Booted back up and installed PD5.13 and now everything works again - but only with AGP 1x transfers !!!

Can it be that I got messed up because the USB-patch was the last thing I installed ?? INTEL says in its USB-support-page that this patch needs to be the first thing to be installed. IS THAT TRUE ?

What can I do ? ANY advice would be appreciated.

    Greetings

I think you need windows98 SE
You will not need usb upgrades anymore.

      Hi dotado,

thought about that myself. But there must be a way to get my baby working properly.

Where are the Win`95 experts ?

The Win95 experts all switched to Win98 some time ago

Yeah, anyone who uses a "true" AGP texturing card, will find out that Win98 is much friendlier, that is probably one of the main reasons for upgrading to W98 (along with more compatible USB, and Fat32 support without any patches).

But is you must use WIN'95 just be sure to install the usbsupp.exe before you install anything to do with AGP or video drivers. Just let the video card act as a PCI device to being with.

Here's one Win95OSR2.1 user with usbsupp.exe installed. I did the install (among other Windows updates) just after installing Windows and I haven't got any problems with it or getting AGP 2x. Maybe there is a obscure issue with usbsupp.exe and PD5?

                Hi Guys,

W95B is IMHO a much better OS than W98, so it does require some tweaking here and there, but at least the end result is something you can work with.
W98 is designed for idiots with all the "helpfull" features, which are hurting performance and being a major pain in the butt ;-)

It is possible to clean out W95 installation, but there are no straight forward instructions for it, so the easiest and fastest procedure is to make a clean installation followed by released W95 updates in the released order, you can let W95 load the drivers that it finds from the W95 CD, but do not start installing any other drivers or software before you have completed installing and updating the OS.

When the OS is installed, install the latest drivers for your hardware, and the software you are going to use.

                Best Regards,
                Pertti

                  Pertti : cool .. i totaly agree with u
i finally found someone else who likes win95b more that win98 .. IMHO win95b and power toys ARE INDEED the best softwares microsoft ever wrote !! )
..WIN95b is way faster .. but not 100% superior .. of course it's much easier to install the OS and go .. but Win95b is simply wayyy fasterrrrrrrr !!
and same problems i had in win95b occurs in win98 .. specially video driver problems .. ( many cards i tried ) so .. at least for me upgradin to win98 doesn't solve anything .. it just makes things worse .. ( usually takin my dinner while waiting for win98 to boot
now going back to the subject ..
according to readings i had on many sites and help files .. i always do the following :
                  1. install win95b
                  2. install usbsupp.exe
                  3. install the chipset patch ( lx/ex/bx .. watever ) usually comes with the mobo )
it's important to install this patch after the usbsupp coz it updates it ( updating the update
                  4. install DX 6.1
                  5. install video drivers.

I am another happy OSR 2.1 user. From day one with my first AGP board (FIC V503+ and G200) I have never had problems that were OS related. With the patches applied properly you shouldn't have a problem. Granted Win 98 has better USB suport and has some extra tools and tricks, I hate the idea of them shoving IE5 down my throat and why did they have to screw up the desktop? Even when you disable that pablum spewing, resource sucker it looks like hell. My opinion, is that Win 95 takes less resources, especialy if you do some memory managment tweaks (setting Vcache, etc).

Sounds like a dreaded conflict for me. Have you tried disabling the usb in both the Bios and in the windoze 95.

                          Hi everybody,

thanx for all your replies. I really thought about switching to Win`98 but now I keep Win`95 and I will give a new installation a try (again!).

arbymo & scotty - I totally agree with you dealing with the differences of win`95/`98 and I also prefer Win`95B because it is in my opinion slighly faster during work (no Active Desktop!).
But I have a question concerning the mobo patch. I don`t use the PIIX-patch from Asus because I lost the CD. So I downloaded a general Win`95-patch from Intel, that includes a PIIX-patch, some sort of a USB-update(?) and something more I forgot. Is that recommendable ??

Thank you all again for replying. Now it`s clear that my mistake was, to install usbsupp.exe last of all.

                          Greetings

Just one step to add at the beginning here - install the AMD patch if you have a AMD cpu 350mhz or higher. This is meant only for the first rev of win95, but I have seen it needed on all versions of win95.

                            Cheers,

                            Steve

SteveC The AMD bug can also happen with windoze 98 as well as well as cpu's under 350. There was a website I found long ago which went into details probably gone by now.
