Problems with g400 and directx6.1

I am getting "error 14" when i try to install directx6.1 on my machine, any idea why?

This error means that you are trying to install an older version of Directx.
Microsoft knowledge base states the following irectX Installation Error -14

Error -14 is generated when trying to install on a system with the same or later version of DirectX already installed.

It happens for instance when trying to install the directx from the Matrox cd and having WIN 98 Se installed ( it has Directx 6.1a)
