  • G400Max decoding v. Hollywood Plus decoding

    I have pre-ordered a G400Max and waiting for
it to arive. In the meantime I bought a
hollywood plus decoder card ('cause I read
it was one of the best) before I finally
saw that the G400Max will do hardware decoding as well. Now the question is, which
will preform better? Should I keep the hollywood plus decoder card, or return it...

    Thanks, Jeremy

I have both, and while the G400 software DVD by Divicore is fantastic, the Hollywood + is better.

But if I had the G400 before the Hollywood +, I probably wouldn't have got the hardware decoder.

You just need a fast enough processor to do it with software. Some say P II 266 or equivalent, minimum, others P II 300.

I wonder if you will be able to use the dualhead feature to use a hardware decoder on the second monitor. That would be cool. Crystal clear 2D/3D on your primary display and then your pass-through hardware decoding on the secondary. Someone with a G400 DualHead and a hardware decoder should try it out.

I have the creative Dxr2 DVD decoder card and the G400. The DVD output of the G400 is better then the Dxr2 at 1024x768 at 100Hz. At lower resoluation (800x600) and lower refresh rate (85Hz) they are about the same. The hardware decoder card just doesn't seem as sharp at high refresh and resolution mode.
I am using a P2-450 and the CPU usage with the Dxr2 is around 2-5% and the G400 is around 25%.
