Are Vanillas going to be dressed as Maxs from now on??? I guess so!!

I got my G400 32MB vanilla today but...

Interesting... My board has a Fan connector and my memory type is 5ns
More interesting is that my cousin got the same card yesterday and guess what...
He got Fan connector and 5ns memory!!!

Just thinking...
Do you guys think that because the demand of G400max boards, Matrox is making all boards with Max high quality components?

Sadly, my ramdac is just 300 mhz.....
By the way. It took me about 3 hours to install this thing..
Conflicting with my Promise UltraAta 66 controler,
Than after conflicting with my Network card (USR)
Finally after reinstalling win98se again. (I really had to...) it's the best board I've seen!

I will keep everybody posted about overclocking this board since tomorrow I'm getting a Lasanha combo fan.

if anything they're probably failed Maxes. Matrox isn't meeting their yield, but that doesn't mean they're not *trying* to, and failing.

Due to the high demand it's probably a matter of, "hey these boards DO work at 300mhz, let's get them the hell out the door!", vs a "hey let's be nice and give everyone 5ns memory!" ...

Pre-consumer recycling, really.

The truth here is that there are Vanilla boards shipping with better components!
Don't tell me that they are underclocked boards because they did not pass tests!

Is is good to rub the clean chip with alcohol after all the glue and grease is taken using Carburator cleaner?

Today I will get my Heatsink/fan combo.
As soon as I get the proper cooling on my G400 5ns card I will overclock it and post the results on its stability.

I will start with 150/200!

Intel does it all the time, Miranda! I'm not saying it's a BAD BOARD, I'm saying it's probably somewhere between G400 and G400Max.

My point is, with this demand, if the thing held up to MAX standards, they would have put the MAX label on it and sold it as such.

But what else are they going to sell the Failed-at-360-but-passed-at-300 boards as?

I totally agree with you on that!

My only hope is that with the proper cooling this board "may" overclock better than Vanillas with 6ns memory type.

By the way, do you know where to buy the best thermal compound for heatsink??

I bought one at Radio Shack but it does not make the heatsink stick on the chip.
Is it normal?
If not should I use the thermal tape that comes with the Lasanha combo??

Yeah, that lithium grease (i don't think it's actually that) stuff isn't going to make the fan stick. The thermal tape works pretty good especially if it's like a small sheet of metal with adhesive on both sides. Looks kinda like the stuff that makes your hot pockets "crisp and flaky even from microwave! (sic)" . Unfortunately it's hard to find, check TechAmerica though.

The stuff that don't stick is Silicon based thermal transfer compound. You'll need to clamp down the heatsink somehow, or use something else.

try and find some good thermal epoxy. melcor makes some. That is what matrox uses to secure the heatsink(thermal epoxy) I am not sure if radioshack carries thermal epoxy or not

purplehaze: the odd thing is that the chip manufacturer should be speed binning the chips before they are attached to boards. Matrox must be in a real hurry.

PS: I've heard that Carburator cleaner is good to take out all the oily glue and residuos from the chip. Does anybody agree?

btw, melcor thermal epoxy comes in 2 parts you have to mix together before application.
