  • DVD picture quality and Matrox G400

Has anyone used the TVOUT function (dual head model) on the G400 to watch DVD movies? How does the picture quality compare with a normal DVD player hooked directly to the set? How much of a difference does using the S-Video connection make? Getting a DVD player for the PC would only appeal to me if the picture quality hit (if there is one) isn't drastic. I know you can also watch DVD movies on the monitor, but that wouldn't be worth my buying a DVD drive.

Well I can't do a whole lot of answering here because I don't have a G400 yet. But TV's are a much lower resolution than monitors, and also have a much higher contrast so chances are if it looks good on your monitor, it's going to look <damn> good on a TV. Just hoping that the G400's output at the right aspect ratio and all. My guess is that it'll look like any DVD player would. DVD ROM drives are getting cheap now anyways and their CDRom equivalent speeds are pretty close to the fastest ROMs so there's really no loss in getting one. Software may even come on DVDrom someday! aha! mhm! yah!

      Hi,

I found the DVD playback on the G400 to be very impressive. The DVD MAX feature is great and I find that the DVD software provided is much much better than Zoran (but that is only my opinion )

      Ciao

i can tell you of my experinces.

1 the g400 dvd is better than hardware decode of cl dxr2 card.

2 my 2nd gen standalone proscan dvd player (panasonic player with lots of extras.) looks better than dxr2 and g400, (g400 dvd playback on 19in ctx monitor.)

3 i have yet to try dvd out to tv from my g400 as i have a real nice dvd player. althoe
dvd rom games and enylpidias look good on your desk top.

4 i say if you have the money or your like me and don't care how much money you spend on eltronic toys. buy both. a standalone player (panasonic and proscan are real nice units. (proscan comes with all the monster cableing you could want or need s video too.)) and a nice dvd drive for dvd rom and that ocational movie you just have to watch while woreking on your pc.
