    I to just purchased a vanilla G400 single display and experienced the same problems down to the word. I thought moving up from a G200 16mB to a G400 32mB would be painless. After 2 1/2 hours my only solution was to boot with my monitor off, until windows loaded. What a solution. Why can't the G400 behave as well as the G200?

      Well, that fix didn't work for me... *sigh*

      Any official word from Matrox on this matter? I mean, it's a pretty significant problem. Monitors that worked fine with the G200 all of a sudden cause problems with the G400. I'm hoping it's driver-related, and can be fixed quick. But if it's in the hardware... oh boy. :P

      Heres to running at 16 colours!

        Perhaps it helps if you import this to your registry.

          Question: Is there such thing as like a monitor switch box? Because then I could have my monitor hooked up to input A or something, but when I'm booting into windows, just switch it to input B, which would have nothing connected... then, when I'm in, switch it back to A! And maybe I can get Matrox to buy it for me! Ya!

            Hi folks,
            i've got the same probs with my G400 DH 32MB.
            But on a Asus P2B. Either the error screen pops ups as shown or i get a blank screen or a screen with bars or boxes. really nice, but not good. When i got it finally working, only in 16 Colours and 640x480. Highest res is 1024 in 256 Colours
            first i oversaw the second page and thought it would has something to do with the hd. I am owning a Maxtor HD, too. But then i saw the second page and saw one having probs with a Fujitsu HD. So i couldn't be the prob. Now i'm trying to Flash the Bios and disable auto recognition. Hopefully it works. Otherwise i have to buy a TNT2.
            Adds: In two other pcs it worked perfectly.
            Adds2: You say, when switching on the monitor when windows has been started works?
            will try it out to!
            Cu and thanks for replies,

              Monitor switches exist and are cheap.
              I have one on my wife's computer. It
              works great.
              I got mine @ a small local shop.

                Hey Grafzahl,

                I don't know if it's the exact same problem as yours, but try booting into Windows when your monitor is unplugged (from the computer). Plug it back in when it's done booting. Tell me how it goes.

                  I had crash or low perf under WinNT4 SP5
                  -> installed W98 (First edition)
                  -> installed drivers
                  -> rebooted
                  -> uncoherent display
                  (look like when you are setting too high
                  refresh rates on a monitor)

                  Problem is: I have a Iiyama A901HT
                  (Vision Master pro 450 19'),
                  an excellent stuff, so I don't think
                  the problem comes from monitor.

                  Has Matrox decided to spare 5c per card
                  changing electronic suppliers?

                  I asked 3 times different tech support about
                  the problems, having no answers.

                  I put back my millenium to work, and I have
                  my $250 3D-card on my desk. It is a nice work.

                    If your Monitor has BNC connectors try to use them, using them you might get a better image quality too.
                    I've tried to use a switchbox some time ago, but this worked only with resolutions up to 800x600 beyond this I got double pictures and the image quality got really bad.

                          I will try BNC connectors.
                          In the while I flashed the last
                          motherboard bios, but nothing changed.

                          Somme other funny things:
                          1.G400 worked just well under Win95

                          2.When putting my millenium and my G400,
                          and connecting the monitor to the millenium,
                          Win98, works fine, and enables the double
                          monitor feature on the display properties.
                          Activating the "second monitor" and plugging
                          my monitor on the G400 gives a correct
                          behaviour! the G400 works as an graphics
                          acclerator for the second screen, but won't
                          work alone.

                          That puzzles me. May be the problem comes
                          from Win98, but I just installed it, and
                          it is perfectly clean of any software.

                          If I had a way to exchange the primary and
                          second graphic cards, I could have my
                          G400 working.
                          (it would be better though if it could work
                          on its own...)

                            Well, I found a temporary fix for my problem. If you just cut the power to the monitor while Windows is booting (more specifically, when the display is initialized) and give it power after Windows boots, it's fine. So, I just have a extension for my monitor power cable, and I just pull it a part when I have to, then shove em back together when I hear my startup sound. I feel sort of Dr. Frankenstein-ish, plugging the power cords back together, causing my monitor to come to life... it's fun!

                                I was forced to install Win95 with the old
                                drivers.

                                It works perfectly.
                                Can't figure out what is screwing up
                                the couple Win98/G400.

                                It is very annoying.
                                That problem (or similar) seems to
                                have been encountered by a number
                                of people, so their must be some
                                work around, or information from Matrox.

                                If you have info, let me know.

                                Merci.
