after changing the irq to 9 i've experienced no more explorer lockups..

i've also installed new monitor drivers, so im not sure if that or the irq change solved the problem, but the important thing is that the problem is solved..

i thank you all for helping me

If it hasn't been mentioned already you need to get the G400 to irq 9 and above otherwise it won't properly. This due to way the card is triggered by the irq.

            Errr, careful...

I've had problems with 9 due to the 9/2 cascade... Can cause strange things to happen.

Okay, there is a distinction between IRQ>8 and IRQ<=8. It's quite easy to write a handler that can serve IRQs from either PIC, but that's not the issue.

What bothers me is that this IRQ thesis just doesn't survive my tests. I have now tested my MAX on #3,#4,#9 and #11 and I cannot report any difference. The card and drivers seem comfortable with any IRQ I feed it.

              ?

                The IRQ preferences are :

                0 1 2 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 3 4 5 6 7 8

So since 0 1 and 2 are taking, the best IRQ for the video card are 9 10 or 11

                Ciao

                    scytale...

i think the whole irq issue is also motherboard related, i have a abit bx6 (rev1) and on my machine the g400 max had some problems when set at irq 3 .. switching to irq 9 solved my problem

However it was strange that i didn't had crashes in heavy videocard usage (no probs with games) but with "normal" windows explorer usage (copying, moving, deleting files etc.)

Like I said and Haig confirmed this a long time ago as feature the G200/400 series that they don't like working on IRQs < 9. So you'll definatley need to move it probably by reserving an IRq slot if you can't do it in 98.
