Slarti.., its Zaphod man! Like chill out on the P3 500, you already groovin' with one, just that its... like... locked at 4.5X, not 5X. Just pump up the juice on the FSB, get 500 now, save the bickies for an infinite-improbability drive!
    Whoa..
    back to Earth
    Whew..
Anyways, I will post some meaningless bum-marks for my el cheapo 16MB OEM G400, on a P3 450 running at either 504, or 558, depending on my mood. 558 not 100%, prime 95 reports errors, though Unreal loops for hours no probs! (strange how the buggy code runs fine!, also, Disney's Lion King crashes out with Blue Screen, forcing a hardware reset!)

I haven't overclocked in a while, it just causes problems in the long run since I beat the living s**t out of my machine on a regular basis. I just started getting other people to pay for my upgrades. The P3-500 is already in... and no $$ out of my pocket.

It wasn't always like this... I had a real life once. A signature, too. I used to be a guy named Gurm. But that's all gone now. Now, my name is Ash... and I am a slave.

Specs? You want specs? Yeah. Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up. See this? This is my boomstick! It's a twelve gauge double barreled Remington, S-Mart's top-of-the-line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids Michigan. Retails for about $109.95. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop Smart. Shop S-mart. Ya got that?! Now I swear, the next one of you primates, even touches me...

Slarty, I like that addition to your sig. Reminds me of someone. Hmm, who could it be- a one-handed man with a chainsaw for the other hand? Nah, never be that guy. He's just too cool.

Slarti.., you must tell me how you get "others" to pay for your upgrades!

I lurv that film, especially the single line..."Grooovy!!" Wouldn't it be great to see a FPS game based on the same film! Better then Resident evil!

Oh, I went to run the benchmarks on Q3, but I have 1.07, and the demos have other names, so I couldn't run any, and I couldn't find a 1.07 to 1.08 upgrade, and I'll be damned before I DL ANOTHER 35MB!

I wouldn't call it Joel's config because I don't do anything that anybody else can't from the menus. I also always post what settings I used and if anyone wants to know my setup they take a look at my home page.

Ok, results are in, the P3 is now stable at 558MHz, I disabled CPUIdle, and let MBM 4 run it if necessary. Q3 at high quality, 1024X768, demo1, 29.7! WooHoo. Oh, powerstrip OC'es the G400 to 188MHz Memory

I'd love to get some really good comparative results from the G400 and Q3Test, but we need to get a really exact settings configuration, because any little thing turned on or off, can mean a big difference. If it matters to any of you, we should all use two programs which can do most of this for us.

                    The two things I'm talking about are <a href="http://home.thezone.net/~bm/files/G400Tweak.zip">G400Tweak</a> and <a href="http://www.q3center.com/files/Q3T1048-2w.exe">Q3Tweak</a>.

The first program shows a list of the major registry settings that are used with the G400 and PD5xx. You can clearly see what is on or off. Some of those, like 32bitZ and Triple Buffering can make a difference in performance.

The second program edits your q3config.cfg for maximum optimization in Q3Test. It has 3 default settings you can select, called "Best of Both Worlds", "Best Performance", and "Best Visual Quality". With these two programs, we can have a psuedo-default setting that we can all verify our results with. No more of this, my "Dynamic Lighting" off, your "Vertex Lighting" on stuff.

Also included should be things like your processor (multiplier X bus speed), OS, RAM, desktop setting, video card, AGP setting, and if your card is overclocked or not. Here is an example:

                    Celeron 333 @ 467 (133x3.5)
                    Windows 95B OSR 2.1 Build 1214
                    128MB PC100 SDRAM
                    Sound Blaster Live! Value
                    Matrox Millennium G400 16MB SH (148/198)
                    AGP1x
                    1280x1024x32

                    Q3Test 1.08

                    G400Tweak
All on except "ForceAGP2x" and "Palettized Textures".

                    Q3Tweak (Best Perf/Best..Worlds/Best Visual)
                    Demo1
                    640x480 - xFPS/xFPS/xFPS
                    800x600 - xFPS/xFPS/xFPS
                    1024x768 - xFPS/xFPS/xFPS

                    Demo2
                    640x480 - xFPS/xFPS/xFPS
                    800x600 - xFPS/xFPS/xFPS
                    1024x768 - xFPS/xFPS/xFPS

Make sure in Q3Tweak, where it says "Color Depth" that you select "Default", so it uses your desktop color depth for Q3Test. Otherwise you'll get an error in Q3Test, as it can't use a different color depth than what your desktop has(at least on my setup).

I think this way, we can all agree that all settings are basically the same, except for ones listed differently. You remove alot of the variables that get people really high frame rates or really low framerates. If you want, use the above as a template. Just use the 'edit' icon and copy and paste from "Celeron" to the last "FPS" rate. I'll post again with my scores on the above system...

                      Q3Test 1.08

All on except "ForceAGP2x" and "Palettized Textures".

                      Q3Tweak (Best Perf/Best..Worlds/Best Visual)
                      Demo1
                      640x480 - 79.1/47.0/~1
                      800x600 - 74.0/43.5/~1
                      1024x768 - 60.7/32.0/~1

                      Demo2
                      640x480 - 69.6/49.6/~1
                      800x600 - 66.4/46.0/~1
                      1024x768 - 57.1/36.5/~1

The Performance and Worlds scores look pretty good, but what's up with those Visual scores? ~1? Heh, well that's because my card only has 16MB of onboard memory, and all those maximum texture settings really eat up the available memory on the card, so it chokes. With a 32MB card, I'm expecting those scores to be much better.
