How to overclock the G400?

Hi!

I plan to overclock my Pentium III 450 to 558 running my system at 124fsb.

I also plan on overclocking my G400 16megs DH.

Can the card handle it? I do have a super duper slot fan next to the G400 in pci slot 1.

So how do I overclock the G400?? Can someone guide me?

I understand that the core speed for the G400 is about 128mhz or something. and the memory is about 168 or something.

Now I want to know which is the safest speed I can overclock to, without damaging my G400 16megs DH.

Which program and how can I go about to overclock? Step by step please! I am new to this.

ok there are two programs to overclock with
one is g200clk(avaliable at murc) and powerstrip.powerstrip has been known to cause some bios problems so you will need to make a matrox emergencey disk for your card before using.the powerstrip is by far the easier utility but the real experts here agree that it may be a risky propositon for now at least.now you can download g200clk and use it however you will need to download g4set as well to check speeds(g200clk does not report correct speeds but does overclock correctly).run g200clk from dos prompt then change your sysclk value example(c:\g200clk /1 300)would overclock you to max specs.you can increase values sparingly until you come to the setting that your individual card cannot attain back down a step and keep a watchful eye on the stability of your system
by the way just run the g4set to make sure your dividers and clocks are set right(c:\g4set and itll report your speeds.if you have a old 486 fan or something it would help to install it as well

My experiences:

No dos based overclock program will work from dos, the drivers reset the G400 to 126/168, regardless.

G4set, reports things accurately, but is missing something for it to work properly, using it to clock results in severe underclocking. 3DMark99Max fillrate goes from 220 or so to 90. I thought it would work using G4set -div 1/2 2/3 1/2 -sclk 300, but no go, it even reports it fine, but it missed some vital step in making it go.

G200Clk 021b, won't work for me, no way no how, set it to anything, doesn't matter what value, and I see a green checkerboard pattern (nothing that neat), severe crash.

Performance Tuner, works, no bios screw ups that I can tell, fillrate in 3dmark99max goes from 220 to 260.

PowerStrip, works, slightly faster than Performance Tuner even in the 3dmark99max game tests.

MGATweak, wish I had a copy to test, it's beta and still private, too bad.

In any event, make sure you get a fan to place near the G400 card, after several hours at 150/200 it might lock up.

How about if I don't want to overclock all the way to the max speed but something between the default clock speed an the max speed?

How do I do that?

Please explain clear. I am very new to this! Honest!

OK, I have a question. Has anyone actually removed the G400 (non MAX) heatsink? I'd like to replace it with a Lasagna Cooler but so far it does not look easy to remove. The G200 was a piece of cake, but this thing is seriously stuck on there. Any hints?

Hi!

I don't plan to remove it. I will be selling the vanilla G400 soon as I will be getting my G400 Max next week.

but then for now I have put a Super Duper slot fan next to the G400 card. this is pretty good and you don't have to remove the heat sink.
