  • G400Max's stable at 120mhz FSB???

I'm waiting for my G400Max to arrive. I want to o/c my system but have always heard that agp video cards are a big limiting factor... How are the G400Max's with a FSB at 120mhz?

    P3 500 (to 620 hopefully)

    Thanx,

That's quite an ambitious overclock! You must have that thing on a Peltier either that or you're running your system in your freezer

I have a P3500@580 with the 115FSB and have no problems. Good luck with getting it going.

Ha!!! No cryogenic system, but the MC1000 is an active peltier cooler that keeps the chip between -4 and 12 degrees C. Now that's freezing the chip. And since I bought retail box, I'm not worried about breaking the processor (not over jucing, just staying @ 2.0v). The system runs fins at that speed, just hope that G400Max will take it...

Well, I'm still waiting for my G400Max (argh - shoulda spent the bucks and pre-ordered from Matrox back in May when I placed my order with another company! - Oh well, it will get here sooner or later)...

However, I do have a Matrox Mystique G200 running in my AGP bus with my FSB set to 133 and the divider for AGP = 2/3 or 89Mhz. I can succesfully force it to AGP 2X, but it doesn't help that much. Only hitting 4160 in the 3DMark99Max @ 640x480-16bit and about 9567 in the CPUMarks.

            Hi,

I don't think cooling will solve your problem since an overclocked FSB has no effect on the G400 chip's frequency but it affects the frequency at which the AGP works. This bus is really sensitive to overcloking. Its standard does not allow any frequency higher than 66MHz. So an FSB of 120 MHz will cause it to run at 120x2/3 which is 80MHz. This however is not the case in i820 motherboards since they originally support an 133MHz FSB. Such motherboards have not hit the market yet though...

Most people haven't had problems with the overclock of the FSB, in fact the G200 will run at 100MHz FSB at 1/1 although it appears by a few posts that the G400 is not quite as forgiving. It will however, apparently handle 83MHz FSB at 1/1 so your 120 at 2/3 (80MHz) should be fine.

I have a G400 32MB and I OC it to 165/220 on my crappy celery 366/OC458.. So I am running a FSB 83MHz.. and I consider that's a really stress for the AGP bus but so far I haven't had any problem with it. So I think the G400 Max should handle the FSB 120MHz pretty easy.

Of course, result might vary but Good Luck.

Since I've not had an agp graphics card before, I wanted to know how you were changing the agp ratio from 1:1 to 2:3 and whatever other choices there are. What does the agp port run at(mhz)? Is there a video performance loss when you o/c the chip and but use a 2/3 ratio?
This part (agp) is new to me... guess I need a rudamentory lesson, lol!

                  Thanx for the help,
                  Jeremy

AGP is designed to run at 66MHz.
So at an FSB of 66, it runs at 1:1
At an FSB of 100, it runs at 2:3

Some mobos do this automatically, some have a jumper or BIOS setting you can adjust yourself.

Well, I have an OEM G400 running on a FSB of 124! so 120 will present no problem. I had a G200 running on 112MHz, because the AGP divider on my mobo didn't work. I "Upgraded" to a TNT, and couldn't get it to run at 100MHz, let alone 112. Speaks bucket-loads on quality manufacturing!

                      P3 450 @ 558, what a bargain!
                      G400 OEM @ 188 Memory What a bargain.
Can't wait till the MAX hits stores down here in Australia, come late September!

My MAX is running on a 129 MHz fsb. My PIII 450 is at 581 on an ABIT BX6-2. The MAX is overclocked to 245 MHz Memory clock with the newest Powerstrip.

                        No problems - stable
