  • What's the best/cost-effective cooling setup for a G400 Vanilla?

I've found a few tweaks for the G400 (PD5 Reg Hacks) but i'm not sure which to use and which would hamper performance. So I decided to try the new MGATweak after hearing it has a few tweaks in it. Im also not sure which options would actually improve performance, but I did use MGAtweak to overclock my G400 32MB SH OEM WITHOUT putting a fan on it. Well it OCed to 147 core fairly easily and I played some smooth Q3Test. It did hang after I tried running 3D MARK MAX Pro after gaming for a bit. So i've set it back to default speeds and i'm hunting for the best G400 cooling setup for around $30 or less. Maggi, how much did your rig cost? Wonder if theres a better way to fasten the fans then superglue.

Lets hear some cool cheap rigs!

I believe the best cooling is a heatsink to draw the heat from the source and a fan to blow across the fins of the heat sink to cool it. I have a lasanga fan and I'm not installing it on my "regular guy" G400. I think that they are way over rated as far as cooling is concerned. In fact they down right suck.(In my expirence)The design defeats the purpose of cooling.

The heatsink on the G400 "RG" is cheesie but it does draw heat from the chip. I bought the Card Cooler. The one with the 2-4" fans its about 25$. I am in the process of cutting up my case with my Dremal and installing 4" screens where the Card Cooler draws its air into the case. As far as krazy glue is concerned I don't think its a great heat transfer solution. It will hold the sink on but how much heat does it aborb compared to the alternatives? Get yourself some heatsink cement, its cheap, or give Kyle from HardOPC 5 bucks for some frag tape. One more thing, forget the heatsink/fan for the back of the card. It will produce 0 improvement in performance. In all the reviews that I have read that was the case. Is'nt that what this is all about? Performance...
    Good Luck with your choice.

Just slap an old pentium or 486 fan to the heatsink. 5bucks. Works great.

          The Rev,

Any extra fans in your case to draw ambient temp room air in and out?

Only way to reject heat is with airflow of a lesser temperature, unless you plan on water or A/C cooling with your O/C.

            SComp:
(going to try to get some details on my setup going)
I have a SuperMicro 750A case. I have two 80mm fans in the front pushing in air at about 79CFM combined. I have one semi-pointless Sunon 80mm fan that came with the case that is supposed to push air onto the CPU, but I have it pushing air onto the backside of my 300A @ 450 (time for an upgrade Eh and onto my Abit BX6-2. I have an Alpha P125C heatsink cooling my CPU and it has two 60mm Sunon fans on it. I have 1 Sunon fan (Supermicro loves that Sunon!) pushing out the PS exhaust, and one nice 80mm fan pushing out air at the top of my case at about 42CFM (real nice fan). I still have a Gamma28 I could use to cool my G400. If all this setup sounds pointless for a 300A @ 450, youre kinda right. But I have soem more work to do and hopefully it will last me till the end of ATX.

Kruzin: Is slapping a 486/Pentium fan on the heatsink the best way of going about things? Are Pentium fans usually better than 486 fans or vise versa? I'm mostly looking for CFM here. What is the size of a 486/Pentium fan, since I can get some (NICE) NMB fans for it.

I'm not so sure how good those lasagna fans are either, and putting a fan on the backside of the G400 probably wont help much. But a Card Cooler (wish I thought of that bracket!) sounds really nice to cool the back of the G400 and get stale air moving. Sounds more pratical. Anyone use a Slot Cooler? Wonder how well they are.

And for attaching the fan, do most all fan screws fit into the heatsink fins well? It sounds like the best attachment methos. Putting tape or glue on the G400 sounds kinda wrong.

Keep the suggestions rolling, I'. sure others would like to know too!

I put a pentium fan on my Vanilla G400. I used some oversized screws due to the wider spacing between the Heatsink fins.

I hope I can find some screws that will fit well. Do you have any idea of the size of the Pentium fan? 60mm?

Thanks for the compliment SComp. My friend has an awesome case for sale at http://www.outsideloop.com/Merchant/...egory_Code=cas

It's still too pricey right now though sinec they are hard to get. But put two 120mm NMB fans in the back and your set. Finally a case that allows 120mm fans with modifying.

Still no word on the size of the Pentium fans. Can you screw anything bigger than a Pentium fan in it?

I might go buy a Card Cooler too

You can bend the "fins" on the heat sink inward and then a regular case screw fits. I really like this Card Cooler ! Its quiet. And it Blows mucho air on both sides of my card. You sound like you have a nice system!

I´ve glued my pentium fan to the heatsink. I used super-glue, contact-glue, or whatever they call it. It works fine, and to remove it later it only needs to be pulled a little hard. The same fan already was in my G200 heatsing, so...

Pentium fan size anyone? How many millimeters?

                        Thanks,

                          Rev,

I believe mine is a 40mm, works great.

If you really want to get serious about it, I have heard some putting dual 486 fans on the heatsink.

WARNING: Don't try this. You *will* get electrocuted!

A friend of mine was having trouble cooling his Voodoo so he pulled the fan out of a washing machine (as one does) and wired it onto the side of his PC. Its huge (15cm blades), but the voltage was all wrong, so he rigged up a 60W light bulb across the fan as a potential divider, and put a dimmer wall socket in the loop. So as you turn the knob the fan slows down and the light gets brighter Great stuff. Its all hanging out the side of his little PC...got to see it to believe it

I think its either 40mm or 50mm for a Pentium size fan. Whats the biggest size fan that fits on a G400 vanilla heatsink?
