  • Some speculation on the future of Matrox

Matrox currently has two major faults-

Inability to keep up with demand
Inability to produce a high quality OpenGl driver (although they are getting better)

I think that Matrox should use more than one chip manufacturer, especially one that does not have other interests (NEC, PSX2). AMD's new fab will be online in December. They need money, I think Matrox should use AMD as primary chip manufacturer. The benefits would be .18 micron copper interconnect and a much higher yield than 15,000 chips a month (for retail), (AMD can do six million a month now, many more with another fab). AMD needs money badly and will probably give a great deal on the chips and that will help to control costs.

The driver issue is getting better and I assume it will still get better with time.

The G400 is far from junk, I own one and am quite happy with it. It took forever to get to me though.

Their next chip should be .18 micron copper and use Mitsubishi's 3d-ram, the 5th generation stuff looks awesome. Then Matrox can't complain about a shortage of sdrams.
A geometry unit should also be present but it should be set up like 3d labs where the CPU can aid if need be or take over if it is way faster. They do this with dual CPU's.

I have no doubt that the features they will incorporate will be great.

    That AMD suggestion was interesting...

Now, I don't think their driver issue is getting any better at all. not at all. Ok the drivers might improve and bugs are fixed yes, but nothing else than that.

Now when win2k comes, then what? we wait another year for nice, stable, bugfree (just like Nvidias TNT2 driver) to appear?

NO! MATROX!!!! GET A GRIP DAMMIT! Hire more programmers! Announce that you do so! Show us some changes/results! Let Nvidia be a good example to you. Watch them and learn, prospect, evolve (etc).

It ain't that hard at all you know. Just fokus, consentrate, think, see solutions etc. IT IS STILL POSSIBLE.

Pardon me saying this, I'm just in the special ass-bag mood: Shit Matrox you ****'n suck!!!!!

Ok having that said, yeah the drivers released MUST be a goof, and we will soon see a nice performance jump just as Ant. Too bad we won't see SMP in Q3 in Win2k

Umm... tish, I dunno what TNT2 drivers YOU use, but the ones I had for my Xentor32's were BUGGY AS HELL.

      Change Resolutions = Crash
      Quit From Quake = Crash
      Lots of Polygons = Crash

      Hmm... ultra stable, eh?

And HOW long have nVidia been developing an ICD? 3 or 4 years?

The one you HAD? You don't have the latest drivers? they'r a really joy-joy-happy-happy! Just load up Q3 in Win2k on a dual p3 500 and whinky whinky.

        Sucker.

No hard feelings? Do you currently have a G400 Max? and is so do you then have win2k? how does it work?
Sorry just trying to change the subject. I won't gloat anymore over Nvidia, and be more fair against Matrox drivers

I guess after a video card has been out for this long (tnt) that even an old rendition 2200 card would work on w2k ,hmmm?

the g200 has been out nearly as long as the tnt does it have support for windows 2k.i can understand why the tnt/tnt2 have support the tnt/2 uses the same basic driver config's
as the tnt but the g400 was the late entry in the race.however we would like some drivers for windows 2k now huhh tish.by the way matrox says sometime this month!

Didn't they say that when people wanted opengl ICD for the g200?

              hihihih

                tish,

With all due respect, think about what you are comparing. Comparing coding a driver for a windows os, and coding an ICD to work with the os are completely different. OpenGL ICD's are extremely difficult to get coded properly. On the other hand, coding a driver for Windblows is relatively simple, as is coding DX support. I believe firmly that there WILL be drivers coming for Win2k.
