Matrox currently has two major faults-
Inability to keep up with demand
Inability to produce a high quality OpenGl driver (although they are getting better)
I think that Matrox should use more than one chip manufacturer, especially one that does not have other interests (NEC, PSX2). AMD's new fab will be online in December. They need money, I think Matrox should use AMD as primary chip manufacturer. The benefits would be .18 micron copper interconnect and a much higher yield than 15,000 chips a month (for retail), (AMD can do six million a month now, many more with another fab). AMD needs money badly and will probably give a great deal on the chips and that will help to control costs.
The driver issue is getting better and I assume it will still get better with time.
The G400 is far from junk, I own one and am quite happy with it. It took forever to get to me though.
Their next chip should be .18 micron copper and use Mitsubishi's 3d-ram, the 5th generation stuff looks awesome. Then Matrox can't complain about a shortage of sdrams.
A geometry unit should also be present but it should be set up like 3d labs where the CPU can aid if need be or take over if it is way faster. They do this with dual CPU's.
I have no doubt that the features they will incorporate will be great.
