  • Heatsink question - Haig, anyone?

How firmly Does the spring clips for the G200 heatsink hold it against the chip surface?

It comes with an adhesive pad but I'd prefer heat transfer grease if the clips provide a firm enough pressure.

I have seen pictures of someone prying the heat sink off, and replacing it with a fan for overclocking. it didn't damage the card, so it cant be to solidly placed, but I wouldn't try removing it...
    Hmmmm, Interesting.

It isn't very strongly at all. The pad is doing more work than the springs. Use the card a little so it's warm, then unclip the springs and twist off ot use a stanley knife blade to remove the heatsink. Then if you replace it with a proper silicone heat transfer compound, clip it back on and it'll be fine.

        Thanks folks!

Actually I'm not removing a heatsink, I'm installing one. I put a G200SD 16M in my K6 system a couple of months ago and it was one of the newer die size runs that came without a heatsink.

Haig pointed me in the right direction and Matrox sent me a heatsink, complete with adhesive pad. I'd rather use the grease and was just wondering if the springs provided enough tension for a firm contact.

This doesn't really get hot enough to need a fan but a heatsink is a good idea.
