I reinstalled my machine today, stripping it down to its bare essentials (VA-503+, K6-III 450, G200 (With CPU cooler fan Krazy GLUEd to heatsink) Maxtor 10 GB 7200 rpm IDE HD (and HD cooler) on primary master and CRW9420 on secondary master. Did a clean install of Win98 SE (Did not format the drive, just used BeOS to kill Windows and Program Files dirs, and to remove all non directory entries in rootdir (C . Much quicker than deltreeing or even killing the dirs from another windows installation but I digress.
Reinstalled win98se in about 15 or so minutes (love that K6-III), then ran the VIA 4in1 driver file. I noticed it only gave me the option to install the busmaster drivers and the irq routing function. I have also noticed that viagart.vxd doesn't seem to be installed but vgartd.vxd is. Could this be the reason why busmastering does not work?
By the way, the 5.21 drivers are more stable in direct3d than 5.13, in fact they approach 4.51 in stability. Picture quality is a little better. OpenGL ICD is problematic. It causes all kinds of screen corruption. A pity since it seems to be quite fast according to WinTune98. 70 MPixels/s as opposed to 5 for 4.51 albeit without an ICD. The machine doesn't hang, the screen just becomes seriously corrupted, I can still shut down and all that. 5.13 would cause me to have to do a hard reset when I did anything openGL related like try to run lava. Any suggestions as to how to install viagart.vxd, right click install ofviagart.inf doesn't work.
OK silly me installed old 4in1 version 9. Just dled version 11 (Aug 13) and installed it. Will reboot now and see what has changed
