  • Problems with Marvel and AMD450

I wonder if anyone could help, I'm currently trying to pugrade my CPU to an AMD450 from the following spec:

    Asus PA5-B (Bios 1.007)
    Intel Pentium 233MMX
    128Mb PC100 RAM
    Marvel G200 16Mb (PD 4.33m Vid Tools 1.21 Bios 2.2)
    SB Live!Value
    Quantum Fireball SE 6.4Gb
    Maxtor Diamondmax 8.4Gb
    ISA V90 Modem
    Windows98

When I install the AMD450 all hell breaks loose. The system is stable until I login, then within 2 minutes
    1. The display corrupts with several black vertical lines appearing and the rest of the screen is garbled.
    2. The machine just hangs.
    3. A green horizonal line appears at the top of the screen and the machine hangs

I've just had the chip replaced by the supplier but it made no difference.

So my main question is this, are there any incompatibilities between the Marvel and AMD450 on a mother board with the Aladin Chipset under Win98?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Have you confirmed the bios for your motherboard are current?Have you upgraded the drivers for your g200?Flashed the bios on your video card?If you've done all of the above ,double check with motherboard manufactuerer, but I suspect a driver and or bios update may be the cure. Also double check all jumper settings and bios settings.Get back for additional help and good luck!

I bet it's voltage. You do know that the K6-2 450 runs a 2.4v? They changed it for the 450 and the K6-3's.

I tried this combination this weekend just to see what was up. I have a K62 450, a P5A and a Mill. G200 running flawlessly, I pulled it, put a Marvel in and same thing happens to me. On a hunch, I bumped the voltage up to 2.6, and it worked. I think the Marvel pulls too much voltage for the Motherboard to keep a steady flow to the processor, and bumping the voltage up helped considerably. Try it, I think this is what is happening to you, too.

heh, I get this problem also, and I could never pinpoint why. I can loop 3D Mark 99 for hours, but get the vertical line/green bar problem in IE 4/5.

Stock voltage for my chip is 2.4v, but the o/c wants 2.7 or 2.8 .

Didnt have this problem with the K6-2 @ 2.7v

art, what kind of cooling you use on your K6-III. I can't overclock my chip one iota

I've got a Global Win CPM 25603-32 (some crazy number like that) that I ordered from www.2cooltek.com. This is one MUTHA of a heatsink and fan, nearly 3" tall I believe.

Was still having some heat problems, so today I cut a hole in the front of my case and put a scavenged p/s fan for intake.

Did have my old CPU fan on the G200, but I need one a wee bit smaller. Email if you want any other info, as we are drifting off topic.

I have one of those GlobalWin fans. I love it. I wish my other fans moved as much air as this thing does.

Thanks for all the ideas, I'll be sure to try them all out.

I'm going on holiday on Saturday so I don;t think I'll have chance to try them out before I go, cases to pack, baby to clothe etc.

I'll let you know how I get on when I return.

                    Thanks again
