  • Kudos to Matrox :)

Well, ordered my max monday, and got it this morning (wednesday). I instaled dit without probs. When i started up a few games, troubles started...
Almost everything crashed after playing for a minute or so. All appz work fine in Win98.I'm checking this board for solutions.

    My setup:
    Asus P2L97
    192MB SDRAM
    PII233
    Adaptec 2940UW
    3com 3C900-TPO
    G400MAX retail
    SBAWE64
    USRobotics sportster voice

PD v 5.21 (came with the board)

    all help welcome...*sigh*

    cheers

there are known issues with AGP voltage and the P2L97 revision 1.05 or less. ASUS offers a work-around, or you can do the modification yourself, it really isnt that difficult

    http://www.asus.com.tw/Products/Tech...c/rivatnt.html

eventhough this is for tnt, the problem exhibits itself in all new 3d chips when sideband operations are used. You can try forcing AGP1x and see if that helps

You have an LX motherboard from Asus, newer generation cards may have problems with this board. You should contact Asus to see what's up.

Turned off busmastering in PD, and it all runs fine now, but sooo slow...
        Is there a workaround?

v12, did you READ Rick's solution?

you have to snip a pin or something though.

This might sound stupid, but how exactly can i find my revision number of the P2L97?

It will be printed on the board somewhere. Look for the ASUS name, and the model number and revision is usually right next to that, with the revision number in very small print.

Usually they put this between the ISA or PCI slots...

It's 1.05 alright. It is strange though that it works fine with busmastering off. I mean, the games (nfs4, drakan, systemshock2) work fine, they're only much slower if i turn busmastering off.
Do you think returning the Mobo would fix this?

V12, it's a voltage supply problem. It's not BIOS patchable, and getting another P2L97 won't fix the problem. Either switch to a BX board or bite the bullet and do the modification.

The reason turning off Bus Mastering fixes this is that it also disables all AGP transfers, including sidebanding - thereby bypassing the problem. It also kills performance.

Revision 2.05 and up on this mobo have switching vice linear regulators and therefore do not have the voltage supply problem, see the same ASUS link as listed above.

Thanks, for the advice guys, i'm returning my mobo, hope they can fix it without ruining the board.
Maybe this is a good reason to upgrade my system...
