Quake3 is an odd case, in that there isn't really a single player option. (I guess you could enable bots, but that's not the point.) Good players argue that in online deathmatches, and that's what Q3 is designed for, framerates are just as important as ping, and to play at high resolutions with all the bells and whistles enabled is counterproductive. It puts you at a severe disadvantage.
On the other had, benchmarking and competition are two different things, and the game certainly is feature rich. Leaving some of the bells and whistles enabled is useful as well, and that's why I suggested a middle ground.
The only reason I suggested that sound be enabled is because ID suggested it after they fixed the timedemo feature. I don't know what their rationale was, and I certainly agree that anything that reduces the number of variables, particularly if you intend to publish your results, is probably a good thing. The same thing goes for Vsync.
It was a just a suggestion. As Jim Hightower once said, there's nothing in the middle of the road but yellow lines and dead armadillos. However, I do think the purpose of this forum is, obviously, to provide information. And there's an element of science to benchmarking. It would be easier to understand the information presented here if our methodologies were similar.
Again, it was just a suggestion.
