It's too bad Matrox isn't public. We'd all have a much clearer picture of what's really going on with them.

Matrox about to be lapped by Nvidia

Grettingz.
I'm kinda new to this forum but I've read most of the messages in this LONG debate and tink that we shouldn't be forgetting something.Matrox has been in the VGA business since the beggining of it and it always has been providing us with quality products NOT just "framerate kings".What's the use if this and that card can deliver zillions of fps in a big resolution if it doesn't serve as anything more than a game accelerator. And I don't want to believe that anyone with any common sense would send the money required to get a high priced 3dfx or nvidia card and a pentium III 450 or 500Mhz with everything else need just to play games with such a powerfull machine.U's be better of with a PSX II or a DreamCast which is cheaper and has better games coverage plus U won't have to 'update' so often etc.Matrox has always delivered proffesional accels. using external DAC's and W-Rams when other manufacturers(except maybe Number 9}were playing around with DRAM.Conclusion:Buying a matrox will give U 'perfect' quality for most computer apps. Why should I care GeForce ar any other card when it's just another GamesAccelerator with poor quality image but can score another 10 fps.If U think gameplay isn't good{which for any healthy guy is anything below 25 to 30 fps and not 100 fps} lower the res , colour depth and OC a bit and U'll be able to use U'r card for another year or so.Don't forget that until a year or two we couldn't dream anything more than 16bpp@800x600 why do we suddently need 1280@1024@32bpp.C YA.

CoolBreeze,
Let's see....
Generation1..Voodoo1, Riva128, Rendition v2100/2200, Permedia2, PowerVR. etc.
Gen2..Voodoo2, TNT, Savage3D, G200, i740,etc.
Gen3..Voodoo3, TNT2, Savage4, G400, ATIRage128, etc.
Gen4..Voodoo4(Napalm), S3 2000, GeForce256..
Looks a generation behind to me..
Don't get me wrong...as of now, I also believe that the MatroxG400MAX is the best card available in the CURRENT generation of video cards.
I wouldn't buy a GeForce256 when it comes out in the next month ir so anyway..Nvidia
is likely just trying to capture the market
with 32MB versions for the time being..like
3dfx did with the Banshee until Voodoo3
was ready for action.
Their real part will be 64MB to compete with
the other cards arriving in a few months.
Just my opinion

Why are we talking about GeForce before it exists? They might as well be hyping some hypothetical Gx4 to the 10,000th power whatever. As long as you can't buy it readily and reasonably, as long as mature drivers do not exist, and as long as no software takes advantage of it, who cares? We might as well be talking about the USS Enterprise, warp drive, and phasers.
Do you really want Matrox to continue playing the hype game? We got that with the MAX.. reviewed in May, now still not readily available in September. They hear all these threads with pissed off people (like me) who have been waiting and waiting, getting more and more upset about their tardiness in delivering their product (I was told Aug 2 originally.. still not here) and then, in contrast to these real world problems, people start yanking their chain about "oh you are about to be wiped out with this awesome new product from nvidia.. what are you gonna do about it?"
Look, I like technology news as much as anyone, but get real... it's not happening yet. Stop talking about it like it's here. No one talks about IA64 like it's here NOW. Calm down!
Personally, I don't want to hear about Matrox's new card until it's really almost here and ready. And for all those at Matrox, please do NOT promise what you can't deliver. I have waited through SIX revisions of your ETA of MAXs to my vendor. Give us ONE date, and keep your WORD about that date. Keep your marketing BS artists under control and be realistic.
Matrox, do you really not care that you are making your most loyal customers extremely angry with you? Is that really good for business?

Kind Regards,
KvH

Tom,
Well...considering these 4th Gen cards you are refering to ARE NOT out yet...then i wouldnt call the G400 a generation behind. Hell...you can say that all the 4th generation cards are behind too then....because there are going to be 5th generation cards after those....and then 6th...and so on and so on. So what is your point? I wouldnt consider a card to be out-dated until there is an actual product on the shelf or on a site for ordering...plus..in my opinion the GeForce doesnt have as many options as the G400...duel head...EBM...etc..All the GeForce has is T&L...which wont even be used for quit some time...and buy then there will probably be a better card out...so i guess its outdated already

CoolBreeze,
Let's relax, O.k.?
I'm just upset with Matrox because I had to
wait so long to get my G400MAX. I feel sorry
for those who pre-ordered a card and are STILL waiting.
Peace!
P.S. Liquid Snake,
I didn't count the S3 ViRGE (325,Dx,GX,GX2,VX) and Rendition v1000 in the
1st gen. because they were before the Voodoo1, which I think is the 1st REAL 3D
chip to start the ball rolling!

Geez, you guys are arguing the same points I started making in my post.
I don't hate Matrox, but I DO feel that they are lagging behind in getting their cards out, and it seems that they release a card after all the hype, and the card has been surpassed by all the others.
I also do NOT like to buy online - I want to be able to walk into a store (CompUSA, Fry's, etc) and buy it off the shelf, and if I DON'T like it, I just return it WITHOUT the hassles of getting an authorization as well as paying SHIPPING CHARGES.
And Jimmy, you MUST be new here! To say that if we want all this to play games, . . . and that a PSX or whatever is what we should get - you are OUT OF YOUR MIND! A game console is pretty much arcade stuff. I play car racing sims (most of you know that already, as I do race real cars too) and military sims - and I said SIMS, not ARCADE. And with the load of realism, high end AI, and 3D realistic graphics that are now being used, you DO need a powerful PC to play them, and a powerful 3D card to go with it. You DO NOT NEED a P5 1000mhz PC to run MS Word (even as bloated as it is)! Hell, I remember old 286's that booted up faster than todays high end PC's, and WP51 popped up in seconds. So what you are saying is a load of bull puckey (in Texan, I think, ha ha).
And to add to that, it is a LOT of these sim games that is pushing the hardware to higher limits than a word or numbers cruncher. As a matter of fact, Origin started the massive push to Pentiums years ago when they released one of the later Wing Commander games - it said PENTIUM ONLY. So in fact, it has become the gaming market that is pushing the power of PC hardware, and thus causing the sales of upgrades. Hell, even Bill Gates made sure to try and make WIN9X to be THE game platform on the PC (and now even in new consoles soon to come out). So next time, Tom, look before you leap

Greetingz MIKE
I know I AM new here and thus havn't heard much of you or anyone else to know whether you bought a PC to play games or do anything else as well.I don't want to give U or anyone else any advice on waht to buy or even say that a PSX is better than a PC.All I wanna say is that everyone is speaking of better 3D hardware thats gonna beat the G400 as if 3D HW is everything.Today I don't think there's a game that can make use of 32MB RAM{I could as well be wrong} in resolutions that most monitors can afford a now everyone is talking about 4Th Gen cards with 64MB.I'm just saying that nobody in here says anything about Matrox's quality DAC's that provide better analog signal than anything else in it's class.I'm sorry if I havn't made my point well but check out the other msgs posted. There's a guy who after having bought his G400 MAX(!!!) and without having yet installed it,asked about info on overclocking it.What's the use of cutting edge hardware if all games of today run more than well on the G400.When there will be games thet the GeForce can run but the G400 gives low fps in low res and bpp than I will agree that matrox has been lapped.

Hi,
I do have my G400Max but I am still completly pissed at Matrox. I had to waited 2 months before I put in my preorder and then had to wait another 2 months for delivery. I paid $250 for the card and then had to pay another $70 for shipping and Tax (I'm in the UK). My card came the day before we were all told that the G-Force would be out by Christmas ......DOH.
I already had a Diamond TNT2 becuse I was pissed at the wait (This cost the equivilant of $150) and although the G400Max is better, in hind sight I wouldn't have botherd.
I wanted this card for a Win2k box, duel processor and although I can get it working for 2D, it is not recognised as a 3D card. Matrox see no urgancy in releasing Win2k drivers, where as Nvidia already support this platform.
Basically Matrox you suck....... next time I will try not get excited over your product till they are actually in the shops and even then I think I'll give it a month or 2, just to give time Nvidia and 3DFX to get out the next generation of cards.

Burrie:
You may not be aware but the PSX2 is not out yet, by the time it is out PC graphix will have surpassed it. Also Sony will be hoping that the PSX has at least a 3year life span, can you imagin the advancments in PC gaming during that time.
PC's are the gaming platform of the future.
