I think we should wait until an officially
announcement from the Microsoft.
I have a bad experience when installed
DX5 which is not from Microsoft site.

Well, new versions can always improve old
things, for instance SSE, AGP ... handlings,
etc.
Anyway I have heard this is a beta version,
some people are having trouble with it and
the final is due by the end of the month.

As far as I know, W2K is shipping with DX7. I've got DX7 on build 2072 (RC1) of W2K, and it works great.
I doubt you'll be able to use it on NT4, though.Comment

I believe that link posted at the top is still RC3 (from the version #s). I haven't tried it myself (yeah right, download DirectX from some unknown source), but, like I said, I've got the final retail version. My DxDiag says all the files are final retail and not beta.Comment
