    Hurricane Floyd

    Hi Guys,
Time again for us all to spare a thought today for the inhabitants of Florida and the Bahamas.

Latest reports show gusts of 180mph and sustained winds of 140mph!!

If you want to keep up with what's going on, there's HAM radio operators posting messages in the following forums:

lucky me, here in orlando. It was touch and go for a while, waiting for Floyd to make that northern turn.

Gert not supposed to be a threat, but Floyd was *supposed* to come closer too.

Floyd scared us enough at Matrox Boca Raton, FL to give us a day and a half off. Sorry, but your next driver release is delayed :-)

Down Here in South Florida we were very lucky. A couple of windy days, no more than 5 minutes of rain at any one time, and didn't even need my UPS to power my G400. Had wearse after noon T-Storms come in from the Everglades. Much less other storms and Hurricanes. My thoughts go out to those in the northern areas who will be hit tonight and tommorrow. I know what it's like, was down here for Hurricane Andrew. Best of Luck to you.

We had Cyclone "Thelma" here in the Northern Territory of Australia last year which narrowly missed Darwin (by about 80 miles). It was a category 5 cyclone (our name for hurricanes) with winds In EXCESS of 320 km/h or 200 mp/h in your speak ;-).

On Xmas Day 1974, Darwin was annihilated by Cyclone Tracy which completely flattened the city.

We usually average 2 or 3 cyclones in the region every "Wet Season" (Oct - March) and an annual rainfall of around 80 - 100 inches.

The "Dry" is just that, Dry :-)

is a good page to keep track of all storms on all sides of the world... Remember that Hong Kong (and Tylau ) is being bashed by a typhoon now as well...

Jorden, wishing all of you in Floyd's and probably Gert's path much luck!!

Gert's just as big and mean, and look where it's heading:

That looks to me as if it's following Floyd... As Floyd prepares to hit NYC, but it's getting boring now - down to cat1 soon.

Orlando hasnt been hit by a major hurricane is decades. This is such a boring town, so fighting at the supermarket for water and batteries was quite entertaining.

It's the Carolinas that are in the path of many more storms. I believe Floyd was the 6th in 5 years.

But every locale has it's own disasters. What I can't grasp is living in "tornado alley" in the Midwest US. That scares me to death. Last year we had tornadoes spawn, and a major hit was taken less than 5 miles from here. YIKES!

Tornadoes, Cyclones, Tropical Storms, Hurricanes... All names for massive spinning air-masses. I live not too far from the touted "Tornado Alley" and we get our share of near misses. Had one jump over our building this spring - literally. We were ducking for cover - (one story prefab metal building with 50+ employees scampering around in the utility room). I jumped into the computer room (innermost room) with the wiring rack bolted to the concrete and running overhead with the steel rack. We heard it howling and yowling, felt a little shudder in the building due to wind gusts, and then silence, and then it kicked up again for a little bit, and then gone. About 1 mile down the highway, it knocked several train cars off the track - just tipped 'em over like dominoes or something.

It was exciting and scary all at the same time.

Makes you want to be nice to others and get in God's good graces..
