    ...another idea I had.

    Whats your slot order? Which PCI slot is every device in? Try keeping #1 (closest to AGP) either empty, or a 'low use/no irq' card. Also I believe the FP40 has a symbios scsi chip, similar to mine.

    More info on 'working setup'

    BH6 bought Nov98 -LN BIOS
    2x128 PC100 cas2
    C300a @464 4.5x103
    AGP = g400max bought 9/3/99 NO bios updates (if it ain't broke...) PDv5.21 and Beta ICD
    PCI1 = empty
    PCI2 = Tekram 390F symbios base UWscsi
    PCI3 = empty or tv-tuner+capture card (I take it out when I'm not using it, gets hot, some video interference, works fine with it though)
    PCI4 = Generic 10/100 card (hurry up DSL!)
    PCI5 = empty/shared
    ISA1 = crappy analog modem
    ISA2 = SB64gold

    Tekram and g400 both have irqs 11 n 12 allll to themselves like good little children should. Sharing is good, but keep your irq to yourself

      Hi Zyph, thanks. I know it's not a BH6 specific problem, it happens to BE6, BX6r2, P2B and other boards as well, sometimes. It's not a hardware conflict either - I had everything out and/or replaced, including CPU, RAM and PS.

      It's quite obvious this is a fairly common problem with the G400, and there seems to be no real solution to it (but a decent workaround in forcing AGP1X).

      I just want to know what's going on. Fair enough, right?

        Hi Scytale,

        We haven't forgotten. We are still looking into this. I don't suppose any of you folks are willing to ship a motherboard to my attention to speed this up?

          Haig! It's kinda good to hear you didn't figure it out yet, thanks for communicating this - bad news is better than no news.

          In my case, your supposition was right: At this time shipping my mainboard would sorta defeat the purpose of my system. I will be going to upgrade this box in October/November to either Camino or Athlon, so then I could send you my BH6.

          Until then I would be happy to run some test code, debug stuff, whatever. If Matrox is uncomfortable with this then please finish this sentence for me

            My concern is with growth. You must grow to become one, to become whole, to become sane. I am not going to force sanity upon you. Rather, I am going to bring out your insanity. When it is pulled out completely, throw into the wind, sanity will happen to you, you will grow. You will be transformated. That is the meaning of meditation

              Hi guys,

              I just saw a post on a NG about systems crashing in 2x mode with a PIII.

              Here's how one guy fixed his problem:

              "Have a look in the c:\windows\system\vmm32 folder for the file vmcpd.vxd.

              If the file version is 4.10.1413 then you have to extract the original file from the windows CD, in my case the 98SE CD and replace the file in this folder.

              The file version for 98 should be 4.10.1998
              The file version for 98SE should be 4.10.2222 (This is what I copied into
              the folder)

              Reboot the machine and bus mastering should now be working, it did for me.

              The G400 Max now fly's. AGP is running at 2X

              The reason for this is that Direct X 6.1 overwrites this file, this causes a
              problem with Pentium 3 floating point operations."

              Can anyone try this and see if it actually fixes the problem?

              Thanks,

              Haig

                I have posted on occasion the use of Win98 SE System File Checker. If used regularly and updated, it quickly identifies damaged/changed/deleted files.

                If you don't use it after upgrades/installs and click on update files, it can be a real mess though sorting through all of the changes at once. Just updating from Win98 to Win98 SE will change a bunch of files. Some are older dates but newer versions and vice versa. Start installing software and it really gets interesting. Using this utility can keep you from a complete reinstall, or at least identify a potential problem regarding changed files.

                If you install the resource kit located on the Win98 SE CD as well, it has a utility to identify which cab folder specific files are located in too. It is under Microsoft File Information.
