• shutdown problems with win98 and g400

Hi Guys, i have a problem that I hope someone can help me resolve.Whenever I go to shutdown my computer it locks up. I've tried installing the new matrox drivers and even upgraded the bios with no success. It boots up fine and all games and dvd movies work well. I'ts only whenever i try to reboot or shut down that I encounter problems. The only way I can get it to shut down proberly is to unload the matrox drivers and use standard vga. This problem cropped up after i attempted to use the 4@1 via motherboard drivers. i uninstalled them and went back to the win98 via drivers because my computer wouldnt start up. Since then this problem has resulted. My system is a 350-amdk6-2,
128megs sdram, 16meg,oem matrox g400, running on a m577 houston motherboard.
Any help or suggesions would be appreciated.
Thanks Dann Swann

Try disabling fast shutdown. It is in your system information folder in the Start/..../system tools section of your start menu.

Are you using Windows 98 Second Edition? The Shutdown Supplement may help you -- although be forewarned that installing it will remove the Disable Fast Shutdown option from the System Configuration Utility.

Or you may want to read How to Troubleshoot Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Problems.

I''ve got the same problem with a P3 450 and an ABIT BX6 R2. I'm running Win98 Fist Edition and The 5.25 drivers.

How do you disable fast shutdown? I couldn't figure it out from the posts above. I did install the Microsoft fix.

I have a slightly different problem than the one outlined in the Microsoft KB article. When I do a "restart", the computer apparently reboots itself too soon- the scandisk comes up on the reboot. If I "shutdown" and then turn the computer back on, no scandisk. So I guess I'd like to try to disable fast shutdown.

This has been annoying me ever since I upgraded my 95 partition to 98 over a year ago. I just upgraded to 98 SE last week in hopes that this would go away. It didn't.

Go to start/run. Type in "msconfig" and press enter. Click the "Advanced" button. Make sure "Disable fast shutdown" is checked.

I agree with the anti-microsoft camp, it's nothing to do with your G400 or hardware, it's a microsoft thing... I tried installing the shutdown suppliment, and it had no effect... bloody Microsoft

As soon as BeOS releases drivers that support my G400 and ethernet card, I'm switching for everything but games. I can see Microsoft losing their so called monopoly very soon if they don't shape up.

Hmmmm... I don't have a "disable fast shutdown".

I have:

Disable System ROM Breakpoint
Disable Virtual HD IRQ
EMM Exclude A0000-FFFF
Force Compatibility mode disk access
VGA 640x480x16
Use SCSI Double-buffering
Enable Starup Menu
Disable Scandisk after bad shutdown (hmm, I could do this and then just ignore the problem!)
Limit Memory to..
Disable UDF file system
Enable Pentium F0 workaround

But no Disable Fast Shutdown.

Did someone write that installing the 98SE shutdown fix already disables fast shutdown? Perhaps that's why the option isn't there...?

Hi LrngToFly,

You really should have tried my suggestion first. The supplement you installed takes away any options of disabling it now, fast shutdown will run the whole time now, that is unless you use the registry editor to change it. Goto Start/Run and type regedit. Under the Registry Editor Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Control/Shutdown. Click on the folder that says Shutdown, then on the right hand side of the editor there is a FastReboot, double click it and a box will appear with a value of one highlighted, type 0 and click ok. <----this is the number zero. Close the Registry Editor, shut down and reboot. This should disable fast shutdown.

Have you checked if the mobo manufacturer has a newer bios for your motherboard ?

My secondary system did the same with Soyo 5EHM (ETEQ/VIA Bios), but when I changed it to DFI-P5BV3+, the problem went away.

I'm running W98SE on that one.

Not sure who you're talking to Pertti, I'm running a Soyo 6BA (original) w/ the latest bios.
