eh. I don't like the sound of that. Even NT has command line. I don't care if it's DOS; hell, give me Bash or something, but what happens when my OS goes poo and I can't use a boot disk to load dos CD drivers to reload the friggin OS? OOhhh that's right, A startup disk should have come with the computer from the OEM when I purchased it. You know, with those OEM tools them OEM's get but us end users are too brick stupid to understand. Kinda sucks I put it together m'self. hrmm.

Pretty soon all there's gonna be is a start button that shows you advertising partners' ads. That'll be the entire system. I'm a good consumer and producer.

An easy way to fix windows (any flavor) is to
use a linux distribution called trinix. You can boot the disk with that and edit just about any filesystem in use right now.

Also for ease of upgrades Windows is still no where near linux. With debian I just use apt it gets everything installs it correctly and then asks me to reboot to use the new kernel if there is one if not no reboot is necessary.

Command prompt good, Steve. Am kind of worried. The "Don't let the end users even have the option to hurt themselves" mentality seems to be what's going on lately. The Apple G4's are soon going to have nothing but one button and a power switch - this will be the interface. Rubbing the button the right way will give you the result you want. Windows will not allow you to even rename files, or let you know what the file types are. You won't be able to type in URL's, you'll only be able to click on links from MSN.

A depraved new world, with such people in it.

But anyways, where can you get this Trinix thing?

Now we know why HAL (in 2001: A Space Odysseus) went whacko... Microsoft released Windows 2K before it was ready, and Dave wasn't able to download the latest service pack.

Ami (ya know, that's a beautiful asian name), since you're such in for command prompt, may I tell you the win2k shell is extraordinary.

              1. You can just drag with the mouse within the shell and it marks everything in white just like what you can do at the desktop.

              2. Just press enter and it copies that to the clipboard.

              3. Just right-click inside the shell and it pasts that back into the prompt.

              4. If you have looong dirs, just type the first three or first two or something (to make it unique) and a * after, then it figuers the rest out on it's own.

              5. You can strech the shell vertically to make it view more lines than the standard 27 lines. Heck, you can drag it to fit a whole 1600x1200 res!

              6. You can scroll it up to the past lines, and also tell it how many lines it must remember.

              7. Instead of the old boring error-messages, here's a new exampel: "'sdkl' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file."

              8. The doskey /ins is standard! ¦ )

Yap, looks much like linux bash or unix shell.

Now, if you already have tried win2k, then I guess this was pointless... ehe ehe ehe

I'd like to see a nature film where an eagle swoops down and pulls a fish out of a lake, and then maybe he's flying along, low to the ground, and the fish pulls a worm out of the ground. Now that's a documentary!

Just for people interested in Millennium. It's also in beta builds right now but I don't think it's available publicaly. You will have to register in a beta program or find it otherwise.

I saw one of the builds, and it's nothing but Win98SE with Win2k GUI on top of it and no reboot to DOS command in shut down, so far. It also doesn't work with the drivers for Win98 if you try to install new drivers, which makes it unusable. I see no reason to go to Millennium when there is Win2k. Millennium is really Microsoft's way of making sure that they will always have the gaming market covered, whether they manage to make DirectX work under Win2k or not.

Tish, thanks for the compliments, but I didn't exactly give myself my name so I dunno if I deserve praise for it

                  Anyways -

I bet there's a hack down to DOS. There's gotta be unless it's running on an NT kernel.

                  Oh and:

                  4. If you have looong dirs, just type the first three or first two or something (to make it unique) and a * after, then it figuers the rest out on it's own.

This scares me. Unlike tab in Bash where you can actually -see- what it interprets the full path as, wouldn't this just be like, "Put the star there, trust me, I'm Windows." ... I don't like that :|

I've tried Win2k but I haven't tried that yet. I'll look inna it.

                    you're right, don't delete anything using *....

MM, win98 with the nice blue win2k background? nah... it just wouldn't be right.
It's said that the only known bugs after all these betas/two RCs is some in Active Directory and the DNS features.

                      Tish:

Not sure about any of the Win9x releases as I have never used them, but all of the functions you describe have been available in NT4 for some time.

In addition, you may want to check your registry for
                      HKEY_CURRENT_USER->Software->Microsoft->Command Processor->CompletionChar

IF you set this to 9 in NT4 you can use the TAB key to complete your dosprompt filenames.

Why isn't it on by default, I wonder...

I tried with other numbers too, still worked. why 9?

Not sure why all the other numbers work also, I always guessed that different numbers would provide different activation keys similar to some UNIX shells. Apparently it is only a true false with any non-zero activating the TAB key.

I am as puzzled as the rest of you on why that is not the default setting. Probably just part of Bill's ever present hatred of the command prompt.

Well, he actually has a "simplification team" which assignment is to make their products simple and usable for novice consumers.

I've heard that team actually managed to get a very significant security hole into the win2k OS. Obviously they've done more than that lately... much more
