  • Hello... Just got my G400 :-)

    Hey,

I've been reading this forum for about 2 months or so. Today I bought a G400 32MB Dual Head (non-MAX of course).

I loved hearing about everything this card could do. But I also had a lot of concerns. Hearing all the driver problems worried me. I play half life a lot, so hearing all the open gl problems worried me, too. And then a couple days ago I heard about a problem with Matrox cards and Abit mainboards (I have a BH6).

Well, let me just say that everything is great! No compatibility problems with my BH6. More than playable framerate in Half Life. I installed the lastes bios and 5.25 drivers without a hitch. The DVD software is just AWESOME. And I am pleased to hear of the turbo gl for the future.

All in all... I am very happy. My previous card was an ATI all in wonder (64 bit) 8mb agp and a voodoo2 12mb sli. The colors are much nicer. More vibrant. And playing games in 32bit color is also very pleasing.

Anyway, just wanted to say hi and also that I look forward to testing out all of the new games and driver updates with the rest of you. (I have the OEM version so I didn't get expendable :-( So i haven't had a chance to witness bump mapping yet).

    Thanks,

    Jarred

Oh... almost forgot my first question for the forum. Right now I have a celeron 300a @450. I could get a 366@ 550. I understand that the G400 scales very well with processor speed. Anyone know how much of a performance increase I can expect?

      a happy customer

      Welcome to the club

Don't know in numbers how much more gain you'll get upgrading your Celery, but as long as you feel comfortable with your actual CPU, just sit and wait until CPU prices drop.

I'm waiting for P3-Celerons to be honest ...

Those will boost the hell outta the G400 !

Hey I'm a newbie here too. I just bought a G400 32mb today. It was going to go into a 300A@464 machine but I had an extra 366@500 sitting around so I'll use that instead. (I have a BP6 with dual celerons but I'm using Win98 because I'd rather play games than fight with an OS--therefore extra cpu).

Anyway, if I were you I would wait, let prices drop again, and get yourself a PIII, like a 500 or a 450 to overclock. I usually don't advocate buying Intel's latest line but with turbogl supporting only SSE or 3dnow we're kinda screwed.

Woohoo! Can't wait to get home and try this card out.

SPSUguy, welcome! Just curious if you are at AGP X 1 or X 2 with your BH6?

ATI had decent 2D. Was usually considered 2nd after Matrox from what I have heard.

I also had VooDoo II's in SLI. It was a big awakening seeing the colors, the "security" word flashing on the far wall going down the corridor...glibbed hunks disgustingly real....

If you do get Expendable retail, you can DL the patch to add bump mapping from the Matrox Game Patches page.

Just got my G400 vanilla too. The 2d is clearly better than my old TNT. My only complaint is some minor driver instability with Quake2. This is certainly the best card I owned in term of visual clarity.
