I was not too impressed with the numbers of the GheyHorse, yes they are pre-production. But the screens looked grainy and stuff. I really don't care about the 1600x1200 gameplay since my monitor only does 1280x1024. The reason the G400max caught my eye was because of it's DVD, TV-out, image quality, and speed all wrapped into one nice package. Untill I see something with better features than that I will wait out my G400MAX. I am tempted by the S2000 though.....

I want 1600x1200 fast so I can get 800x600 fast with AA enabled. As for the GeForce 256, I am still laughing, imagine the laughing policeman track. But realistically, I don't think T&L has made an appearance yet, (guess OGL games won't automatically benefit from the start, eh? ) but the lack of a monster fillrate is already rearing it's ugly head. (Pun intended) As for basing a S2000 on experiences with an S3 Virge, how about basing your experience with a riva 128 with a TNT 2 Ultra, ok bad example, how about extrapolating the 3D perforance of a G400 after owning a Mystique or something?

Bottom line, $250-$300, not worth it.

I find it so funny, that most (ignorant) gamers are slamming the GeForce for its fillrate, while most developers would choose for a card with T&L and good fillrate than a card without T&L and insane fillrate. They think that the fillrate is quite sufficient for their games right now, but that the geometry they can use is really to low. So, you can all rant about not enough fillrate, but within a half year it'll be the people with T&L who will be laughing.

PS: Not really meant as a flaming, but it's time that some people start to think before they rant. The Matrox followers here are just as blindly binded to Matrox as the 3dfx and nVidia followers on the newsgroups. Is it so hard to admit that another company has produced a better product?

Developers want everything and then some, asking them to pick which they'd rather is silly. AA doesn't affect developers, either it is enabled or not, T&L does, they can design new things with it. AA is about having the choice of higher resolutions or lower ones with similar quality and it's for end users, not developers. Ask a game developer to paint a house and give him the choice between either paint or a brush and you'll get paint as an answer 99% of the time with the other 1% saying they'd rather both.

Of course everybody wants more polygons, it's why T&L will be a big thing, but once you are there you are also going to want to get rid of the suddenly more noticeable aliasing effects, either by going higher res or using AA, both require fillrate, 1600x1200 at 30 fps means you will be lucky to get 25fps at 800x600 AA. And that's just current games, get real high polygon games and see that 30fps drop like a stone.

              faster is not always better.

i have owend (still own) 3dfx banshee, 3dfx voodoo 3 2000 agp, ok fast but look blah.

s3 savage 4 looks great but slow then burns out when you try and run it at 110 clock (junk) (returned to comp usa)

g200 looks great speed ok (still looks better than 3dfx banshee ./v3 gave to my bother inlaw becuase hes a cheap bastard who waits untill i upgrade. (maybe hes smart he gets good stuff for free only 1 gen behind curent tech)

g400 looks fantastic (better than anything else out there) speed in d3d almost unmatched open gl getting better and if i owend a p3 turbo gl would kick ass but hey i really don't care about ogl anyway its only 3 or 4 games (that you can also play in d3d) stop complaining and tell momy and dady that you want a p3 cpu for christmass.

and a virge gx2 (burner rig) i am not useing the banshee its roting on a shelf.

I, too, am anxiously awaiting the release of the S2000. I may get one the first day available. I am of course not talking about the S3 video card, but about the new Honda roadster. 240HP from 2.0 litres? 10 grand less than a BMW M-Roadster? Oh yeah baby.

Unfortunately with my 6'6" frame, I probably won't be able to wedge myself in there. If I do, I'll never get back out...

                  Franksch3,

The jury is still out on the GeForce, at this time, I really couldn't say its a better product til its been out for a while.

As far as your other comment, I think people buy a product for what they want, need or think is better for them, thats what I do anyway. The G400 seems to be the best choice for me at this time, this is my 1st M product and to be honest about it, I really think this card is good, does what I wanted, the others on the market right now? nope. IMHO

Blindly following? Comments like that piss people off.

                  Not flaming here also.

I'm a proud G400 owner here but I think people are missing a couple of serious points about the GeForce.

First, is that people are all angry that it runs at 120mhz. Why? If it's a complete redesign it doesn't have to run at a super high clock speed if the architecture is better. I don't know if this is a good analogy but taking a second generation "Corvette" (TNT2) versus a "McLaren F1" (the Ge Force 256) The McLaren will win. (don't get all up in arms, I think my G400 is a "Porsche" )

Also, if you believe the hype from Nvidia all they have done is taken the bottleneck away from the CPU. I think current games will not run that much faster or even future games won't run that much faster. HUH????

What I'll think you'll see is that a scene with 10,000 polygons on a Ge Force will run at 40FPS. A scene with 100,000 polygons will run at the same 40fps! That's simply not the case with any video card out there right now.

As for the drivers, of course, they're beta. I don't believe they'll release anything with less image quality than can be found on the TNT2. (second only to Matrox for visual quality) That would be just stupid.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong about these points

I'm not even going to get into the topic of this thread, which is basically "Nvidia is kicking Matrox's ass, let's make fun of the name of the card."

But I have to say Kruzin, the fact that you have to resort to making fun of Anand just because he's young goes to prove once again that you can't criticize him on his reviews alone, you have to make some childish insult. Your credibility is zero with me.

                        Filmgreek,

How is it that Nvidia is kicking anyone's ass at this time??? They haven't even released the card yet, we won't know how good this card is until there are shipping versions with final drivers.

As far as Anand goes, he does not do good reviews anymore. Calling a card such as the G400, with it's features, visual quality, and high resolution performance severely crippled just goes to prove that he may very well be a bit denser than everyone thinks. I have to agree that he is pretty childish with his reviews as of late, but that IS to be expected from someone who is still sucking down cokes at the school cafeteria. His image of an ideal piece of hardware is obviously something that makes first person shooters run the fastest at low resolutions with little regard paid to any other things.

Oh NO! My credability with Flem geek is zero! What will I do?
                          BWHAHAHHAHA.

My comment was made to show a point. People think Anand is some all-knowing computer expert with years of industry experience. He's not. He's a kid who isn't even old enough to take a trip by himself, who's only experience comes from playing games and runing benchmarks. Put a real app in front of him, and watch him squirm.

You want a critisism on his reviews...where are his real-world app benches, comments on how desktop apps run/look. Where does he weigh the value of the added features of any card? His reviews are childish comparisons of game after game. These are not a reviews, they are just benchmarks. A good review covers the product from all aspects, not just how many fps a game does.

And I must say, Flemgeek, that you have never had any credability with me, so I think you can figure out how little you opinion really means to me.

Remember this>>>The beta benchmarks are always the best indication of the True performance.
You guys can Quote me on that. You will all see that the GF will be released right around these benches. And this is for a card that is going to be released by the end of september right? Thats what they said.heheh
This will be a joke, let me explain. Anyone that would be stupid enough to payup for this card will be ripped off. There are no game that will use T&L until AFTER X-mas. Forget that quote "it will be a T&L x-mas" Trying to guess a game title release is next to impossible.
And by the first quarter Nvidia will release a much better card that will be the same price. Why then would owning this first GF be worth the $$. I bet it wont look as good as this G400. And I hope that they make a great card. It only makes thing beter for all of use in the long run.
I am waiting for the new B2 with EVMBM. !! ya-hoo. And will be spending the holidays playing it like I did last year with Half-Life.
Anandtech has a great site I read it everyday. I dont agree with everything but I dont think that that is a requirement.

There is one very good thing about the GF. Since obviously there's going to be very many little nVidia keeners running out to buy them, it will create a decent sized market for the game designers to write games for. Then, when Matrox releases their T&L capable card next year, there will be plenty of games around that support it...

Uh, sorry, mine runs at 166. Anyway, a 'geforce supporter' was lamenting that it was tested at 'only 120mhz' when in fact that is what it will sell as. He was implying it was an unfair test, that they were running a slower part, when in fact they weren't. Mhz doesn't mean shit anyway UDUH, a PII at 100 would cream all over a 286 at 400.

I am a 'matrox user' only, and this thread still sucks ass. I'd kill to have the 'close thread' ability on this forum.
