    Hey Zypher,

RAMBUS only gets kicked by PC133 on a x86 architecture. iNTEL is trying to force RAMBUS now because it's Merced architecture IS going to be faster with it. Since on the merced applications can give hints that they need some data in a few instructions. That way latency isn't a big problem anymore.

    With regards

We bought a whole bunch of memory in late July, early August. Not unreasonable stuff - IBM sticks. They were $75 each for 128MB CAS2. Retailers wanted $120 around here and that was just too much since we were buying a dozen sticks. Now the same memory from the same supplier is $275, and $400 retail. Ouch.

And what cpu design are you using right now?

Whats cpu instruction format are all the good games written for? What has the most *end user* software?

I personally care not if some $50k server can afford and utilize rambus. Rambus does no good for 99.99% of us on this forum, or most home grown computer freaks of any kind. Theres *much* better memory for serious computers anyway. Some setups pump out insane tera or petabyte/sec memory tranfser rates. Look for the STREAM site for more info.

Merced class cpus aren't scheduled to be within personal pc price range until 2002 or later.

              Zypher,

how much of all that software are you actually using? A very small percentage. As soon as the Merced comes out, most games and applications will soon only work on that processor. But I agree, right now we don't need RAMBUS. But I certainly understand why iNTEL is pressing RAMBUS right now. And if I'm correct a consumer version of the Merced will be launched in the first half of 2001.

Seems lick Intel just got a nother kick in the jewels
                    Just ripped this from ANANDTECH:

                    Samsung Halts Rambus Production

Thanks to Andrew Schmidt for sending me word of this article over at TechWeb. Looks like Samsung is haulting production of Rambus chips in response to Intel's i820 delays:
Faced with an uncertain future for RDRAM sales and rising prices for SDRAM products, memory vendors are starting to shift their production mix.
"There will be no more wafer starts for RDRAM until we can better understand how long it will take to resolve the Camino situation," said Avo Kanadjian, vice president for memory marketing at Samsung Semiconductor, San Jose, Calif. "Any capacity that can be freed up will be reassigned to 128-Mbit or 256-Mbit SDRAM products. We will require some convincing before we restart any RDRAM production."

well it looks to be a k7 for me. hum let me think k7 500 and mobo and use all my other stuf over (includeing memory) or p3 600b or what ever wait untill intel fixes the problem with the 820 and by way to exspensive ram bust memory. i think i will spend to much money and wait way to long and buy the intel based system (I DON'T THINK SO !) FU INTEL stop torchering your enginers and design a new product for a change.
