If it takes N goobleboppers to get over a bump in the road, you'll never know what it is until faster drivers come along, if new drivers are 30% faster in higher resolutions but remain at the same level in low resolutions you could make a guess that it's some odd hardware issue or for some odd reason the drivers are only optimised for high res modes.
