  • G400 Lockup + SB Live

Well I tried all the suggestions I have seen here, even tried removing the SB Live card
and the computer still froze up.

AMD K6-II-3D 300 Mhz, Caintech AGM5, SB Live, Win 98, USR PCI Modem, Mitsumi CDR 2x8x,Pioneer 6xDVD, 64 megs, 13 gig Quantim,
    G400 Dual 32 meg.

Pulling the last of the hair out of my head.....

Just as a matter of point. The problem isn't limited to the G400. I was having similar problems with my G200. I managed to force the IRQ's elsewhere, and lo and behold, nothing crashes anymore.

      Well Talked with Matrox support,

Problem was narrowed down to a Bios error
      on the Chaintech MB.

Updated the bios and loaded new Windows drivers from Chaintech for Buss Mastering, and AGP performance.

System is now running for 24 hours with no lockups, and excellant graphics and sound...

Well, looks like you've got the infamous SBLive/G400 combo problem. Yeah, I know quite a lot of other people don't have this problem, but there seems to be no clear pattern distinguishing between the hardware configs that have or don't have this problem.

Some people have managed to get their systems to work through various methods (see link below), but they don't work for some people (including me!), so the only sure-fire solution is to disable bus mastering in the PowerDesk options page. BUT disabling bus mastering effectively cuts your game performance by about half. Still waiting for Matrox to do something about it.

          DaveP,

Oooohh! Now you've got me interested! As I posted in another thread, I have been having problems with the combination:

          Chaintech 6BTM motherboard
          G400 (32MB DH)
          Hauppauge WinTV
          SBLive! Value

which result in a system hang any time I try to use the Hauppauge card with G400 busmastering & AGP 2x enabled. Can you give me the details of your working setup? i.e.

          Chaintech motherboard model
          Chaintech (Award?) BIOS version
Chaintech busmastering & AGP drivers version
          G400 drivers & BIOS levels

          Thanks a million...
          Alan
