I believe I have solved the problem. It was Adaptec's Easy CD Creator. I grabbed an unused hard drive and reinstalled 98SE and Q2 on it. Q2 ran fine in OGL. Then I installed Creator 3.0, and lo and behold, Q2 locked up. I uninstalled Creator, and Q2 still locked up. I then deleted C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ASPIENUM.VXD, and it no longer locked up. So then I reinstalled Creator 3.0, then installed the 3.5 patch, then deleted ASPIENUM.VXD, but when I ran Q2, it locked up. So I uninstalled Creator, and it still locked up. Figuring the uninstall wasn't complete, I removed all instances of "adaptec" in the registry, and it still locked up, so there must still be something left from the install which is causing the problem but I can't pinpoint. Conclusion: Easy CD Creator is evil. On this system where I originally found this Q2 lockup, I had Creator 4 installed, so this version also exhibits the same problem.

So now I have reinstalled 98SE with everything I originally had on it, minus Easy CD creator, and I am having no more problems. I suspect that Adaptec's software doesn't like to use non-Adaptec SCSI cards, though it's really strange that it took an OpenGL problem to discover the incompatibility.

xortam, the v4.60 (1019) ASPI version that I previously used came from Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4. I noticed that 3.5C uses v4.60 (1017). 98SE comes with v1.00 and no ASPIENUM.VXD. What does this VXD do anyway? I have noticed no other software other than Creator that uses it.

Good info getting uncovered here. I have Matrox delivering me a replacement card tomorrow so I'll wait before I try yanking the CDRW app(s). I don't even want to consider a reinstall of the OS et.al. Never used EZ-SCSI and shyed away from trying after hearing some bad things about the recent release. Haven't had any use yet for the CD Creator software (though its been on my system since I built this box). I've never burned a CDR on my Yamaha 4416S; I just keep pumping out the RWs (getting them for $1.50 apiece!!!)

Boom, thanks for clarifying the ASPI revision issue.

Boom is correct. I had forgotten I installed the EZ CD Creator 1.03 update patch, just recently available, before upgrading to Creator 4. This patch takes you up to 4.60, 1017, 11/20/98.

        Creator 4 installs the 1019, 5/10/99 version.

While early versions of Creator 3.0 may have been evil, the 3.5c patch solved alot of problems. I have been running version 3.5c with no trouble, including the ASPI layer.

I have EZ SCSI 5.0 as well. Only problems with it were Drive Preparer, which I disabled in MSCONFIG/Startup and QuickScan, which you can unselect under custom install. QuickScan caused scanner link failure with my 2400S, which is connected to my wide external case connector with an adapter.

Seems there are no absolutes here as to having problems with this software.

Bingo on the EZCD software. If you happened to be using TweakUI you would also notice that EZCD disables the autologin function and will not allow it to be properly re-enabled. Removal of EZCD from my system cured this problem as well as some other flaky problems.

Just to give you all an update ... The replacement card Matrox sent me has resolved my lock ups. The old card was the Canadian 2-wire fan version and the new card is the Irish 3-wire fan version. I suspected bad hardware all along but its hard to be sure with all that's involved in these environments.
