  • Am i doing something very wrong with my G400?

    I just got my G400 2 days ago and cant seem to get it to work correctly. First off I installed the CD's drivers first and then the new ICD from Matrox. I keep getting frequent lockups (everything locks up but mouse can still move around) and where horizontal lines come across the screen and cover the entire screen top to bottom (i think this may be called a tearing affect) this happens when I am just going to web pages. The biggest problem I have is when I try to load up tribes its extremely choppy, this is @ 16 bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated! thank you!

    What are your systems specs (ie Motherboard, processor and it's rated speed, the speed you are actually running the processor, what AGP divider are you using, what PCI cards, and if possible what IRQ's your system is using)? Also, make sure to run the Matrox uninstaller, then download PD 5.30 and install it. The ICD will be included with the install, there is no need to go to another ICD.

      >I have a BX6 Rev2 with a P3 450@450 (thought overlclocking was the problem at >first), AGP is running at 2/3 divider so 66MHZ

      what PCI cards
      SB Live Value!
      STB TV/FM tuner
      10BaseT Network Card
      Mylex SCSI2 card

      >and if possible what IRQ's your system is >using)?
      I think it was 11 or 9 also when it booted up there was another device called "multimedia device" on the same IRQ as my "display adapter"

      >Also, make sure to run the Matrox >uninstaller, then download PD 5.30 and >install it. The ICD will be included with >the install, there is no need to go to >another ICD.
      hmm.. forgot to uninstall it, i'll try that out

      Also the card is an OEM 32meg dualhead (I got it off of someone is there any way to verify its a 32meg card?)

      I also tried to run 3D Mark 99 and it froze in under 5 seconds, this is after I took the card out and reseated it making sure the contacts were all in tightly.

      Any other ideas? I'm trying the 1x AGP carck now

      Thanks a lot!

        First thing to do is read this thread:
        http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum5/HTML/005078.html

        If that does not help you, then try shuffling your PCI cards and IRQ's until you get it right, sometimes certain PCI cards don't play nice with the G400, also be certain you are running the Live!'s latest drivers.

          oh wow, I just did the 1x AGP crack and it doesnt lock up at all in the 3D Mark benchmark. I even tried overlclocking the CPU and it works fine, i get:

          3D Mark: 5673
          CPU: 9000

          Is still very choppy in Tribes and only does 800x600 using the included (with tribes) 16bit ICD there any way I can get Tribes to run smoothly with the G400?

            Your 32MB card should have memory chips on both sides of the card. If you can make it to Power Desk, amount of memory will also show up under Information.

              No, Tribes is best run on the two cards tribes coded it for: Nvidia TNT, and 3dfx.
              Be sure to check out the thread I posted a link to, you may be able to get 2x (you should, many users here get 2X with no problems on the same MB as yours).

                The problem you're having with Tribes most likely has little to do with your G400. The OpenGL support in Tribes is very poor. Your best bet is to run Tribes in software mode. Hopefully Tribes software developers will correct this problem in future releases, but for now software mode seems to be the only option.

                  Hmm thats very sad about Tribes.. well here is an update, the inner edge was already bent so I didnt think it was because of contact but I tried bending the outer edge (side with screw) outward so I could get the card to come in a little more and it went through 3D max fine. Wierd thing though, the 3D mark and CPU marks are 20 and 50 points lower with 2x (yes I did reset after doing the Force 2x hack) is there any way to check if this is actually running at 2x?

                  Also thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate the immediate answers i'm getting, especially Rags!

                      Solo2,
                      This sounds like 2 problems.
                      1. ABit-vs-case-vs-G400 fit problem. There are lot's of sugestions floating around about this. Don't settle for 1x!
                      Look here -> http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum5/HTML/005078.html
                      and here -> http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum5/HTML/004833.html

                      2. IRQ conflict.
                      Try re-arranging your cards like so.
                      AGP           XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX G400 obviously
                      PCI 0 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX empty!
                      PCI 1 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mylex SCSI2 card
                      PCI 2 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX SB Live Value!
                      PCI 3 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX 10BaseT Network Card
                      PCI 4 XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX STB TV/FM tuner

                      The rest empty.

                      Go into PNP/PCI page of bios and set
                      PCI0 = 12
                      PCI1 = 11
                      PCI2 = 10
                      PCI3 = 9

                        Solo2:

                        Did I read wrong, or are you running the CD drivers (5.11) with the new ICD? That could cause MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR problems!

                        If so, download 5.30 RIGHT NOW.

                          The "mutimedia device" is probably the TV Tuner or (more likely) the SB Live. The gx00's don't like shairing all too much. Have you tried moveing the cards around or atleast reassigning the IRQ's. That's the first place I'd look.

                            wow u guys rock! I'm buried with work right now but in the afternoon i'm going to try every sugesstion. Also AAGP 2x seems to work right after I shove the card in (sucessful 3D Mark Benchmark) but then it just stops working the next boot, it seems like its getting loose but I bent the slot cover so that it would fit all the way in. Also the PCI slot under the card has always been free, I'm going to try the config that cjoley suggested. Also I ran UT Demo under AGP 1x @ 32 bit and wow it is amazing!!
