  • ut demo *scratch*

does anyone have problem with d3d while installing ut demo? the installation won't recognize my g400max as a d3d compatiable card, and refused to let me run utdemo at full screen. i tried opengl, which lets me run at full screen, but i get an error message when i try to run it at 1024x768.

    help.

It wont detect your 3d card unless you have installed directx7

I don't know how I got it to work, but I can play UT in NT4 with DX 5.2. It runs like crap in OGL mode, but it's playable in DX.

Although Epic has done a good job on optimizing Direct3D, it still lacks enormously. My Voodoo2 in 640x480x16 has an average of 57 fps, while my G400 (at MAX speed) only has 37 fps.

When high quality textures is enabled the game ocasionally stutters. Probably bad texture management from Unreal. But I didn't expected elsewise from a game company which hasn't got decent Direct3D and OpenGL support after 20 patches or so. ;-)

Frank u r wrong, u must remeber that the highest texture quality the V2 gives you is 256x256 and 16bit color, you can't compare it to the Max texture quality settings on a G400Max its not the smae scale. if you'll compare both at the LOWEST texture quality it would compare the performance of the cards.

hey mgleason, how did you get DX5.2 to werk in NT4. I've tried with various sets of files and instructions i've found on net, but none of them seem to properly install it.

zero, I used the DX5.2 install I got from an inside Microsoft source. Email me if you're interested in getting it. mgleason@uci.edu

Hmm...I'd disagree it lacks enormously. My D3D scores with my vanilla at 143:

medium textures, medium skins, detailed textures on, HUD off (it's really not needed).

                  1024 x 768 16 bit 59 fps
                  1024 x 769 32 bit 52 fps

Plays *very* smooth for me. As smooth as SLI, and with 32 bit color looks better than SLI. Absolutely no stuttering or slowdown even in heavy fire fights.

hi, i went home, download, and installed dx7. and i have to say "WOW", what an improvement! i wonder what "D3D" ut demo was running before.

                    couple questions though:

                    1) do you know a place at the upper floor where there are a body armor, 2 health pack, a barrel gun(is that what it's called?), and a 50 bullets pack is? if you look from the ledge that goes up there.. do you noticed a "hourglass" effect? like if you look around.. the walls seems to stretch a bit?

                    2) the wall right behind the health packs, there seem sto be a zigzag shadow that keeps showing up and moves when you walk toward the health packs?

                    3) one time i was up at the ledge and a AI mob spawn right there and begun to shoot at me.. i turn and start shooting back at him.. he did the jump and continue to shoot at each other and all the sudden i got boot out of the desktop and the program closed. no error messages though.. i do noticed that my cpu and case temp to be around 44c. could the boot happened because the card was getting too hot? if not.. any suggestion to why it happened?

                    4) if i successfully completed the level (and who wouldn't when you just sit at the upper ledge and kills anything that moves *grin*), then try to exit the demo, i get an error message about the emu101.***. i think that's the sblive driver. i am using the v1.00 sblive driver.. can't find the 2.0 driver because cl took it down from the website *grumble*. anyone else experienced this?

i got around 35fps at 1024x768x32 with everything on except trileanar, vsync, and triple buffering. going to see if i can tweak it more tonight.

actually.. i think "fish eye" effect would be a more appropriate description of what i was trying to say. like the walls stretch a bit, then shrinks back as i continue to look up and down at a direction.

The zigzag textures are very irrating, aren't they?

well.. it's kinda annoying when you see something that's not suppose to be there.. but i didn't notice that "effect" anywhere else in the map. strange

The wall effects, where you get zig-zags at the junction of wall pieces, didn't happen on the old drivers in high world detail mode. They used to be really bad in medium world detail mode, though.

High detail looks much better than medium detail. I couldn't stand playing on medium detail. Thank goodness the new drivers sped up high detail mode.

My CPU normally operates at 45 to 49 degrees C, case is at around 32 to 34 degrees C. Never had a problem yet with heat. The G200/Millennium II used to get the CPU up to 60 degrees C, case up to 37 degrees C. Good thing the G400 MAX is cooler than those two. :-)
