I think that the best Soft DVD player is

Cyberlink PowerDVD, i got it with my Toshba 6x (MD-1212) dvd rom, and it is much better than Matrox, so much better, no artifacts, no slowdowns, no nothing! it GLIDES, and i have some old version!

I keep reading that Cinemaster is best, but PowerDVD does have 3D-Now! support and since you are running an Athlon cpu, that could explain it. There is a utility for measuring player speeds called DVDSpeed, try that.

Tried it with PII-450, 128Mb, Pioneer U03S but couldn't get the audio sync'ed with video for more than 3min or so. Also video is a little bit jumpy on some scenes.

Except for ome stability problems audio+video works great with Matrox player + cinemaster v2 updates. Very low CPU usage (20-25%), very good image quality (both on 17" monitor and 16:9 TV), good quality surround sound (SB128 + external Dolby surround aplifier).

Like I said, except for some stability problems its performing great...

I just tried the AC-3 S/PDIF output generated by PowerDVD 2.096, and there is always frequent glitch. But I don't meet this problem with WinDVD 1.2.85 ... ?? Does it mean PowerDVD need more powerful CPU than Celeron 300P@558 ? So there must be some bugs of PowerDVD to output AC-3 to SB Live!.

The picture quality of PowerDVD 2 is still not as good as that of WinDVD... My result might be different from others because I always use high resolutions like 1152x864x32bpp or 1280x960x32bpp. In these resolutions, the picture's edge looks jaggy with bad filter.

In my experience, WinDVD does it best. I met motion flip in some vob demo with Cinemaster engine and PowerDVD. PowerDVD can fix vertical flip with forcing BOB mode, but it still can't eliminate the horizontal one. However, WinDVD doesn't have any one of these problems.

Plus the perfect AC-3 transparent output from the S/PDIF of SB Live!, I would suggest those who don't want to use RealMagic Hollywood+ take this solution to get both good Video & Audio quality. Anyway, you still need a AC-3 decorder...
