  • AGP 1X? AGP 2X?...

    Greetings:

I have just noticed something that happens with certain settings with my vanilla G400. When I turn VSync on and double buffering on, I get a reading of AGP 1x and lockups on D3D games. When I turn off VSync and turn triple buffering on, I get a reading of AGP 2x and no lockups on D3D games. What is the deal?

    ABIT LX6 MOBO
    64 Mb RAM
    4.3 Gig HD
    Vanilla G400-32/Lasagna cooling fan
    Ensoniq sound card
    Win 95 OSR 2.1

So far I am very happy with the G400 except the tortuous driver upgrades. Thanks.

    Sincerely,

    THIS is strange ...

could you please tell me how you change the state of VSync and TripleBuffering ???

      Hi Maggi:

Thanks for the quick response. I use an applet titled "G400 Tweak ver. 0.002". This is a program that I picked up to quickly change things like VSync, busmastering, triple buffering, sub-pixel accuracy, etc. It ends up being a menu tab in PowerDesk. This is how I change my attributes. Even if I use the PD5.X reghacks though, the results are the same (busmastering on or off makes no difference to stability; only to speed). Wierd, huh. Not a big deal, but stranger than most. Thanks again.

      Sincerely,

        I see ...

be aware that some of those changes require a reboot to function properly.

Try a reboot after changing and see if the problems persist.

And are you sure that using the reg-patches results in the same ?
I ask because it 'looks' like MGATweak is not working properly ... make sure you're using that latest release.

          Hi Maggi:

All your points are reasonable. I upgraded to the latest release of "G400 Tweak" (ver. 0.006) and tried many combinations of reghacks. Rebooted before, during and after changes. No difference in results! BUT!! (I am embarrassed to admit) I found the problem. I was letting Win95 take care of my swap file size (I know, I know). Apparently, my C: drive was nearly full, therefore the swap file size was dangerously low. When I manually changed the swap file to my other drive and increased its size appropriately, everything worked like it should. Go figure! In any case, thanks for the help.

          Sincerely,

              Hi Maggi:

Yes, all games run perfectly in D3D. Half-Life in OpenGL could stand some improvment (to me, OpenGl is prettier than D3D), but it still runs well even then. You are a gem!! Thanks again.

                Well,

I thought I'd revive this thread.

I noticed using the PCI List utility that my AGP is working only at 1x transfer. How does one convince the G400 plain to move up to 2x transfer?

Regarding the swap file solution, mine is set manually at about 200 megs, as opposed to letting Windows 98SE play with it. I might play with this and see what happens.

                Any ideas anyone?

I had the smae problem before. My G400Max can not run at AGP2X mode. But I format my hard disk and re-intall windows 98 and upgrade to Win98SE also re-install all the application software. Then my G400Max can using AGP 2X now without any problem.
