  • G400 Max 3 wire fans...I want those rpms

Ok, that thread form a few weeks back...I pestered some folks...heres a retake:

Some maxes have 3 wire fans..mine does at least.

That third wire is a rpm read...

Does it get written? Or output?
Anyway it can be read across the agp bus off the card?

Cmon some of you matrox techs lurk here...throw me a bone. Any internal software you all wrote to read the fan? Does the bios keep track of it? What about a sram or register or chip or whatever the hell most motherboards throw their voltage, temp and rpms to? Fed across a agp wire?

Anyone else out there use motherboard monitor to read their temp, fans and voltage?
Wouldn't it be nice to get a readout on agp cards that have 3 wire fans? (some tnt2s as well, maybe v3 3500)

Only one post in an ocean of others, but this one has some looong term value to it

Yeah, that would be a damned cool feature for those who o/c their MAXs. As for if it can be done, I know it is possoble, but not sure how the MAX handles the rpm dignal from the core fan. I played with some fan rpm data over the summer on some high-res graphics boards to see what air flow cooled it enough. We threw the data off the agp bus using the card's bios to handle the fan feedback, and a driver to output the data from the mobo to the screen. Since I have no idea how the MAX is setup for the fan (or if the 3rd wire even goes anywhere) I wouldn't know where to begin.
Anyone with some inside info provide some light into this interesting idea?

Why don't you just plug that 3 wire cable onto your MoBo ???

My Asus P2B-S has three connectors for that purpose ...

And the readout can be de-/activated in the bios under power management.
