  • No 3D with G400 after installing ver 5.30.007 ?

Hi all nice ppl in this wonderful forum

Do you know why my g400 dualhead max stops to work in 3D-mode after upgrading to the new 5.30.007-drivers (dated oct08)?

From the beginning I had all my accessories (soundboard, scsi, dvdcard, mpegcard, network) installed in my system
but when the g400 didn't work I thought it might be a good idea to remove all theese cards and so I left the g400 alone.

Now my configuration looks like this:

    Abit BE6 (bios dated aug27)
    PIII 450 (no oc yet)
    Matrox G400MAX (*yummie*)
    2x64MB 100Mhz SDRAM (standard)
IBM 24GXP 18GB (UDMA66) on the primary master (on the udma66-controller)
IBM xxGXP 14.4GB (UDMA33) on the secondary master (on the udma66-controller)
IBM 8.4GB (UDMA33) on the secondary slave (on the udma66-controller)
Creative DVD-player on the secondary master (on the udma33-controller)
    Samsung Syncmaster 17GLS Monitor

These are exactly the steps I've done:

    1. Cleaned the system disk and reinstalled win98 (swe)
    2. Installed the g400 drivers along with DirectX 6.1 from the cd included with the card
    3. Rebooted and put the desktop resolution to 1024x768x32bit
    4. Installed Matrox G400 Techdemo, Expendable & Quake3 test 1.08
    5. Started 'em and everything works fine.
    6. Shut down the computer and put in my SBLive! (non value) in PCI-slot 2 (I've tried other slots as well)
    7. Booted windows and put in my sblive-drivers cd when it found the new hardware...
    8. Rebooted
    9. Started Matrox G400 Techdemo, Expendable & Quake3 and everything works just fine..

    but then ..

    10. Installed the new drivers (5.30.007) found on here on matroxusers.com and rebooted
    11. Now neither the Techdemo, Expendable nor Quake3 test works. These are the symptoms:

The Techdemo: When I start it the screens blacks out (as it should) and the music starts.. but instead of
getting the menu it crashes and I'm back to the Windows desktop.

Expendable: I come to the menu and can choose type of game etc. I choose New Game but when it loads it crashes (back to the desktop)

Quake3: Crashes even earlier... I start it and 3 seconds later I'm back to the desktop.. (*blap*, no mercy)
(Note! in an earlier installation of Windows I made, I didn't choose to upgrade Q3 with the turbo-driver and then Q3 worked even after updating to this new driver)

What the heck is wrong? Can it be some type of Bios setting that causes this? I know you guyz can solve this =)

    Regards,

Tege (yet another proud g400 owner.. (or.. well.. soon anyway )

Be sure you have LiveWare! 2.1 Installed.
However, you may have to disable the bus mastering in order to run 3d games properly.

Blind? No. The only thing recently updated is the FAQ... SteveC is one lazy son of a...

          Anyway, here are some tips:

BIOS settings to look for are AGP aperture (>=128), Video Caching (try Disable), Video Shadow (try Disable), P_IRQ0 (set to 11). Make sure the G400 IRQ is not shared.

You may want to do a do forum search on the SBLive. There are some issues.
There are also issues with some PnP monitor settings -> Forum search.

Try DirectX 7 instead of 6.1.

If you need to disable busmastering (as Baxman suggested), then you're likely having an IRQ conflict and you'd want to fix that. If you disable G400 busmastering you'll get a huge performance hit.

Thanx for helping me out! You're the best
Unfortunately I haven't got my computer here at my office but I will test these things as soon as I get home

The only thing I find weird is that the everything worked (even the SBLive) before updating the g400-drivers... (but maybe the installation did something that makes the SBLive to crash)

Well, well !! When I read your installation steps I notice that you you have installed first other G400 drivers, then PD5.30. So do this: Uninstall your matrox-drivers with unistaller, after that reboot and reinstall PD5.30 . If your system hangs after that then try other suggested operations...

                  Scytale

Yes, my performance figures are not nice right now when I have bus mastering disabled but it is not an IRQ problem, I have checked that out. I was hoping for some help here...

I did not get my SBLive/G400 combo to until yesterday (beacuse the lack of LW 2.1).

Can DirectX 7.0 be any help`?
