  • another IRQ question

    hi all
    here`s another IRQ question
    should i have my vanilla g400 32 meg on it`s own irq number?Currently it`s sharing IRQ11
with "IRQ holder for PCI steering"
should i move the pci one to some where else disable it or what??
    my system is
    AMD k62-400,ASUS p5a m/board,128meg 100mhz SDRAM,Aztech 338-A3D sound card,win98

and it`s stuck in agp 1 not agp 2
All post will be appreciated and all help noted:^))))

PCI Steering will follow your card around, it has something to do with the fact that you have an IRQ. Bios upgrades sometimes help the AGP trouble you're having

That IRQ holder is normal. It will always be there with the G400, or any other busmastering device...no way to get rid of it.

And many SS7 mobos can't get 2x running on Matrox cards. It's not a big deal, as nothing out there uses AGP1x to it's fullest, much less 2x. In most apps/games, you will never see a difference...

        thanks for the reply
now i see 2 irq holders for pci steering
one with the g400 on irq10
and one with the sound card on irq5
now i`m assuming that hardware needs this?

Tried to upgrade my bios and the m/board got last thursday and the bios is 3 months ahead of the one on the net(via me trying to flash my bios and the warning it gave me)maybe should goto the older ver??hhhmmmm

my old fusion used to load windoze faster than this (over hyped?) (brillant?) card

It is normal to have One "IRQ Holder for PCI steering" for each PCI card in a system. That's the way Win98 handles its' Plug and Pray resource management. If you delete them they will simply reinstall the next time you restart. They usually only show up in Device Manager after there has been a change in the ESCD table, of resources for cards in your system. You could reinstall the OS clean and they wouldn't show up in Device Manager, though they'd still be listed in the IRQ listing of System Information. But as soon as the BIOS does an ESCD update they will then appear in Device Manager again. Frankly if they weren't there Windows wouldn't function.

Just be carefull.. if you have more than one IRQ holder for PCI steering assigned to a card, then you system is not assigning it's ressources right or you have a additionnal component not properly detected... 1 card that does BUS MAstering = 1 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering

So... Does this mean I can check which devices are using bus mastering, by looking at the IRQ holders? I kinda assumed all PCI/AGP devices got those under W98..
