  • Do I take the plunge

I think the Matrox G400 card 16mb dual head card is for me to do a bit of home video editing however the more I research it on the net I am more hestiate as I read about all the problems and conflicts people are having. I only have a basic knowledge about computers. Do I take the plunge and buy it.

I'm running an Abit BH6 mobo
    Celeron 400 128mb ram
    magic voodoo 2
Fly video 2 TV/capture card. (No TV out)

    Hi molly43,

I didn't know that there was a Dual head 16MB. I have only seen the Single Head 16MB G400. Anyway for video editing you may even want to go with 32MB Dual Head.
And of course if you have any problems you just have to come back here for help

You mention video editing - don't get an OEM G400 then if you plan on getting the wonderful Rainbow Runnner G-Series (They have the necessary connectors missing). You could always go for a marvel. In any case, the worst you'll have on your setup, is the G400 not fitting perfectly (easily fixed with a little force and/or ingenuity) or maybe you'll have to run in AGP1X mode (makes little, if any difference to real world apps).

Not all OEM cards are non-upgradeable. All dual-head cards, OEM or otherwise can be upgraded (as far as I'm aware).

BTW, Steve, do the Video Tools function (i.e are you able to capture) whilst dual-head multi-display is enabled?

Say Steve, don't know what studying does to your brain, but I think you'd better stop studying then... My OEM G400 has the pin connectors for an RR-G. Or it must be my imagination

I'm sorry, my mistake - it's only the Single Head OEMs that don't have the right connectors. Hey, I'm only hooman, so shoot me!

RoGuE - I don't know as I've not got a 2nd monitor up here at uni yet. I will hope I do sometime soon, but if anyone else knows...? I know it works with DVD MAX on - that's useful, cos when you're previewing your editied video, the output goes full screen onto the 2nd screen.
