I'd go with Scytale's first guess ... Heat !

For a check, just leave the tower case open and see if it helps. When you don't get anymore lockups, you might consider adding soem fans to raise the airflow in your case.

Yep, heat's my first guess, too. Much less likely (but possible) is defective memory on something. If taking the cover off doesn't help, I'll try to help you find good diagnostic software.

BTW, I tested it by closing my case again (after a full summer of case open), and within 45 minutes I had the same problems

1) Take out your Abit board.

2) Stomp on it.

3) Replace board with a real motherboard, like a Soyo, Asus, AOpen, or Tyan. :-)

HL runs rock solid on my machine (well, in the game - exiting to the menus makes it wig out occasionally - I can't task switch in fullscreen mode).

My whole machine runs rock solid, for 72hours+, with the case CLOSED. HL, Rollcage, UT, websurfing, etc.

Other things to try:

- Make sure nothing's sharing IRQs.
- Make sure the G400 has an IRQ of 9 or higher.
- Make sure your CPU's operating somewhere below 60 degrees C
- Make sure your ambient case temp is below 37 degrees C or so.

--> How'd you do ANY of these??? Ya I know... kinda lame... I just got this new computer which is still so darn exciting and more powerful than my old computer

- IRQ sharing can be checked in the Device Manager in Windows - right click My Computer, choose Properties, Click the Device Manager tab, Double-click the Computer entry in the Device Manager pane.

You can also see the IRQs in use when booting. Hit Pause on the screen you see after the POST (RAM count screen).

- Most decent motherboard BIOSes allow you to hard set the IRQs that the motherboard assigns to slots. Keep in mind that:

1) The AGP slot shares an IRQ with one or two PCI slots (for me, it's sharing with PCI slot 1 and 5).

2) Locking in IRQs doesn't always work - I've seen Windows override these settings before (I may have PNP OS enabled in my BIOS, though).

- All decent motherboards come with temperature monitoring hardware. The software is provided by the motherboard manufacturer. It can monitor voltages, fan speeds, and temperatures. Make sure you have temp monitoring enabled in the BIOS.

And if all else fails, stomp on the motherboard and go get one with less compatibility issues, like a Soyo or Asus or Tyan.

Snark, there is not irq for your video card !

Try to see in your BIOS if you disabled something regarding "assigning irq to video card"

Your video card MUST have an irq !

defenetly your Vcard should have an IRQ (11 would be good) then , did you OC your G400 & how much & with what util, be sure your card runs @ default clock, dont use any OC utils or OC method while searching your problem, set you MBO @ default bus @ your CPU eather

- you can try to remove SB LIVE ! from PC just to se how it works withot SB LIVE !

- for default setings use MATROX TWEAK UTIL from MATROX

- enable Vsync

- you can try old drivers 5.13 or 5.20 to see what hapends then .

-switch between resolutions & color modes to see if any works stable

While you're in the BIOS settings to enable IRQ for VGA, you should disable COM2.
IRQ for VGA is in the PNP/PCI config menu and the settings for com (serial) ports is in the Integrated Peripherals menu. Thats assuming you have an Award bios.
Do that and let us know what the situation is from there, especially the interrupt listings again.

the things that are sharing on irq 11 should be fine together, definately get your g400 on irq 9, and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you have a HEAT problem
