  • How do I disable bus mastering ?

    Hi guys !

I'm trying to boost my 3d Mark 99 MAX score beyond the achieved 3800 (PIII 450, G400 MAX, 600*800, 16 bit, double buffer).
Everyone is writting about disabling bus mastering to gain performance - HOW DO I DO THAT ?

    I have an ABIT BE6 MB, a G400 MAX and I'm running WIN 98SE.

What about AGP 1x or 2x is there a performance boost there ? And how do I change between the two settings (1x and 2x) on the ABIT BE6 ?

If you are getting AGP2X with BusMastering ON, leave it alone. People are turning it of for trouble shooting and trouble resolution (well atleast as a work around).

I think that you should be getting higher that 3800 on 3dmark99max with a PIII450.... I get 4400 on my PII-515mhz...

One thing you most definitely DON'T want to do is disable busmatering - then anything the graphics does will go through the CPU, and that's not a good thing!

Also, if you want to go faster, your PIII450 on a BE6 is just dying to be overclocked to 558mhz or higher! Go for it!

SteveC's right. My P3-450 is at 558 right now. I have 256MB of CAS 2 ram and a G400Max. At the moment I have achieved a high value of 5699 with the same settings you listed for 3DMark99Max in this rig. Make sure you have the latest build of the benchmark too (build 200). The older builds evidently return lower results, due to a lack of SSE optimizations. This sounds close to the kinds of score your getting right now.

        Have fun!

ACE : What is your FSB, AGP divider and voltage settings when you're running at 558 MHz ??

The reason for asking is that my configuration is exactly the same as yours with 256 MB PC100 RAM and the G400 MAX.

Have you tweaked yor G400(MAX) ? If positive - to what then ?

Dough - my ver. of 3DMark is build 100 !!! Anyone got a link to an upgrade to build 200 or do you need to download a completely new version ?

And finally - can you all confirm that I shouldn't disable bus mastering ?? Allthough I've read some posts with people disabling them and getting higher scores.

            Hi Double,

Don't mess with the Busmastering, just get the new build of 3DMark

Also here is a blank copy of the Bios settings for the BE6. Save and print this for your records.

Sorry Double. I tried to reply earlier, but our network here at the office was getting kinda busy (must be all those people surfin' the web ).

                Anyway-
                1. FSB is at 124 (1/3 PCI)- o/c's the PCI bus a bit, but no probs so far (~6 months)
                2. AGP is at 2/3.
                3. Left voltage at CPU default (2.05v?). Again, no probs with this boxed processor in 6 months.
                4. When I achieved my best score in 3D Mark 99 Max, it was without the Max overclocked or tweaked. All I did was change 1 setting in 3D Mark from triple buffering to double buffering. The score was 5699 at 800x600x16bit. The CPU returned (guessing because I'm at work and didn't pay too much attention to it at home) > 8000 CPUMarks.

Definitely don't disable busmastering. I don't know how anyone gets higher scores that way, but I do know that it should cause more work for the processor than is necessary, which is never a good thing. Just think, in games that are already CPU limited, you'll further lower the performance.

                Hope this helps.

                  Thank you all.

I've downloaded the build 200 of 3DMARK 99 Max by now and tested the system again.

Now I got 4529 3Dmarks and 7038 CPUmarks, which is the result I was expecting and app. 5% higher than the one for PIII 450 on global compare - so I'm satisfied (for now)

Now it's time to try some o/c.
                  Regards
