There are several questions that come to mind. What PCI slot are you trying to put the SB Live into? If you're trying the one right next to the AGP slot, try another one, the AGP slot doesn't much like anything sitting next to it. Move the SB Live as far away from your G400 as possible. Next, lets see a list of your IRQ numbers before you insert the SB Live. I'd like to know what IRQ is assigned to the G400. Make sure that you have your BIOS set to Assign an IRQ to VGA.

    Keep us posted

HA!HA!HA! this is funy that 50% of the people that post question in this forum have or have had the same type of problem as me. Wach that is not a irq conflick with your G400. If not desinstall and reinstall Liveware 3.00(Sound blaster!Live is desined to create(creative Ha) problem)If it bug agan. I don't no for what raison Sound blaster!live like when G400 is runing on AGP X1 (It must be because he don't like a non creative video card)

return the G400 for this????? It's just need to have the proper configuration.. what are uyou talking about??? The live is know to cause problems in an out with the proper drivers and if it shares.... why change the G400?? There are several step to do before even thinking of this... I hope tha tyou do not deal with this with your computer since if everytime you have a problem you return a card or do an RMA, i pitty you... can't beleive that you call yourself a computer technician...

TomV, simply try the card in another PCI slot, it must be sharing resources with another card.

You might find something you can use

I have to agree with Jazz. Though I have a P3 and an Asus mobo, I also have a G400 (max) and a SB Live!value. They work fine together, but I *did* have to d/l the latest beta AGP driver from Asus, shuffle the cards around (the AGP and PCI1 share the same IRQ), and had to force the IRQ's through BIOS. Letting the system manage it kept forcing the G400 to share with a PCI slot, even though there was one IRQ channel completely open (go figure!). I put the sound card and the modem on the same channel, and the AGP slot all by its lonesome.

              TomV,

Most likely some resource conflict. I think Madman is going way beyond reason here. SBLive and G400 work fine together, it's just a question of configuration.

Thank you all for your help.

With just having installed 98 and all the updated drivers, I noticed that the G400 was sharing IRQ5 with PCI Steering. So I forced it to use IRQ9. I havent installed a sound card yet, I might try the MX300. But, Every time I try to run a game the screen turns black?

TomV, just remember that it is normal for the G400 to share with the IRQ Holder... there would be a problem if this WAS NOT there... Don't try to change it, it will always come back

                    G400max, sb-live, abit bx6r2 mobo, 129mhz fsb. agp 2x (verified with a 32mb texture rendering speed of 100.0 fps)

No problems whatever with the sb-live and g400max. Never had to play with drivers, no bios updates, no problems at all. Had liveware 2.0,2.1,3.0 all fine with g400max.
You must have an irq conflict.

I think my system is running pretty stable now. The TechDemo works great and I have only istalled one game so far (X-Wing Alliance) has never looked or played better. But, I can't get the expendable demo or Descent3 demo to work, sreen just goes black. And still haven't installed SB Live! I've read better reviews for the MX300 so I think I'll give it a try. Any help would be great.

Forgot this info, The slot closet to the AGP slot is coverd by the fan I put on the G400. My modem is in the last PCI slot and the sb live was on the second PCI slot. My G400 is now back on IRQ 5 sharing with IRQ steering. From what I've heard the MX300 combined with The Athlon 550 with the gigabyte board and the G400 just probably works better together. I love being in uncharted territory. Did you also know that the G400 is not on the AMD peripheral list.
