I could indeed recommend a BX chipset for several reasons, but to be honest with you, I do not think that this will improve the problem you are getting now. This simply seems unrelated. So if you are happy with your board and are not having other problems with it, don't change... since we might be really disapointed by changing your components to get the same results with DVD playback.

      Zwisch,

Good advice on the face of it, and I agree. But the fact is that I've had numerous issues with busmastering and other problems on this SS7 setup. The Zoran/DVD isn't my only issue, and I've gotten tired of having to workaround so many seeming support/compatability problems that SS7 is experiencing. I've been a dedicated AMD customer for three upgrades, but it appears that the 'WinTel' cabal is never going to give their competitors a level playing field.

So that's why I'm asking--since I am prepared to reluctantly disengage from the compatability wars, am I just asking for trouble from another front? I've paid too much for this education, and I don't want to just start over with another learning curve. Let me turn on my box and watch it run!

          Beauty is in the eye...

but, the general buzz around here and other groups has been that the soyo (6BA_IV) or Asus P3B-F are good choices.

I myself have the Asus with a celery 400@500.

As far as the promise card, havn't tried it.
Note that the Abit boards made recently do include the highpoint UDMA/66 controller chip, giving you 4 total IDE channels (8Dev).

          happy hunting

              Zwisch, Rags, and others:

              Happy Happy Joy Joy

My particular problem was the Promise Ultra 66 Driver mentioned above. I'm running in full hardware config. and playing movies!! Even though your suggestions weren't a specific fix, you were a great help--I kept reading between the lines that I was focusing on the wrong thing.--and I was. Thanx again. I'm off now to post a new thread for others who have my profile.
