    G400 running at 1/1 AGP?

    I am trying to overclock a retail box version of the Pentium III 600mhz with its standard Intel heatsink and fan. Do I need to burn in the new CPU to increase o/c results? Also, does it do any good to change the AGP bus from 2/3 to 1/1 if I am using a G400 Max?

    I checked the Pentium III 600 overclocking results of individuals posted at the CPU Data section on overclockers.com. Two posts there said they had very good results with the original Intel heatsink and fan, and they also mentioned that they had the G400 running at 1/1 AGP. What does that mean?

    I have an Asus P2B BX chipset mobo with the bus set at 2/3 and a Matrox G400 Max. Would I benefit or get better o/c results from the Pentium III 600 if I set the AGP bus to 1?

    This is a little over my head, but I am willing to try anything reasonable to increase my o/c chances.

    NO!!! Lets your AGP 2/3. 1/1 will force your card to work the speed of the FSB. That is not very good for your MAX. I dont ting that your MAX will work at 112 Mhz or more

      also, even though you get good results with that "so called" heatsink and fan that intel so graciously gives you, it will decrease the life of the cpu because the chip is running MUCH hotter! get a good aftermarket one and you'll be happier

        i use the std intel heatsink at 600 and i don't give a toss. By the time my chip goes bang i'd have sold it to someone else!!!!

          Ah, one of my favorite topics, although I haven't yet pushed anything over the edge of sanity... yet...

          Anyway, I've heard that burning a CPU can help stabilize what might be a marginal and slightly unstable chip at a certain FSB&voltage.

          Although there's always the possibilty of frying something when you push things over spec, the probabilities are usually fairly low if you follow "standard overclocking procedures". I would tend to push things up slowly until things become unstable, and then back down to whatever seems reasonable. You can use those cool databases on overclockers.com to give you an idea of what's reasonable for your setup.

          If you have a mobo with temerpature gauges, you can check on temps as you go, if that makes you any more comfortable. Get better cooling if you think you need it. It also doesn't hurt to have extra cooling, especially if you're concerned. "Cooling, cooling, cooling", as they say.

          I run my system with the case open and a small fan blowing into it (yes, all function and little on aesthetics) and it runs at ambient temperature, which these days is down to about 18-19 celsius. Case closed and normal cooling, it's up to about 27-29 celsius. As you can see, I doubt this is deteriorating my CPU much if at all. Of course, I have a celeron, which is likely easier to overclock than your P3 (can't wait for the new P3 based celerons to come out so I can get SSE).

          In any event, I tend to agree with birdy. I think that most CPUs I overclock will be sold off or become obsolete before they die, especially since I tend to buy contemporaneously mid-end CPUs, overclock them, and stretch them out for a year or two before upgrading, instead of risking the expensive CPUs.
