  • G400 / Win2000 / 3DS MAX 3

    Hi all.

I've been pondering a G400 Max for some time now but I'm a bit burnt by the G200 I got as soon as it was released.

    - How far along has the G400 OpenGL gotten? I'm mainly using my puter for web design / Photoshop / 3DS MAX and need a quality card, which I know the G400 is, but I also need great OpenGL support for MAX. If it handles the occasional game I play well it's not a drawback either though. 9)

    - How far along has the W2K drivers gotten? Has anyone tried them 'seriously'?

    - How well does the dualhead setup work with 3DS MAX? Has anyone got any real life experience from this one?

    All feedback appreciated. Thanks!

I think the ICD is coming along nicely--for gaming. There are people here who are much better qualified to comment about the ICD's performance with applications.

The Windows 2000 G400 drivers are in a very early stage of development, as is the case for most boards. Matrox has released a beta driver, and many people have reported problems. It certainly isn't fully functional. No PowerDesk. No DirectX 7 support. Many BSOD's reported.

Recently, we have seen reports, from people using versions of Windows 2000 not available to the public, that indicate many improvements.

I suggest you do I search on the forum, as it has been a "hot" topic of discussion.

Thanks for the feedback. I have been searching the forums but really gotten nowhere, that's why I posted these specific questions. I'm currently using a TNT2 Ultra in W2K and it doesn't perform very well in OpenGL either. I guess when W2K is released we'll have better drivers.

        Hi MartinNo5,

It's not a good idea to buy a Matrox video card for what you hope it will be able to do in the future, I'm sure you have learnt that. Without any W2k drivers your best bet is to look at the state of OpenGL on NT 4 and assume W2k is going to be pretty similiar.

        Paul.
