Some thoughts I have, what are the differences between your computer and the one in the shop except for the monitor ?
What are your bus mastering and agp (x1/x2) settings ?

      Thanks cloudy.

I don't know the features of the computer used for testing in the shop (but I'll ask).

Regarding the second question, I have the bus mastering enabled (no conflicts with SBlive! since I replaced vcmpd.vxd file and I moved the sound card into another PCI slot)and SANDRA diagnostic reports I am using AGP 2x 133 mhz (maybe it's not important: when I used Vanilla, SANDRA diagnostic reported I was using AGP 1x and adviced me to set AGP to 2x to have better performances).

My bios does not let me to shift between AGP 1x and 2x.

        Thanks for your support Gurm.

I agree with you that the test at the shop was not relevant.

Yesterday I also tried to set through P-desk (the only way I know) my monitor frequency to 60 Hz (1024x768).
Please consider that when I install Win98 for the first time everything is ok till I install PD and change resolution from 640x480x16 colors.

Yesterday I even tried to force AGP settings (from 2x to 1x) through PD hack registry (I didn't reboot), but SANDRA still reported I used AGP 133 mhz.

Anyway, according to Jorden suggestions, I'll try to check and able/disable the vsynch (I don't know how it is set know) through Matrox Overclock Utility .

        Thank again.

          Not quite related, but...

          I've a G400 MAX.

The second display has "winked out," twice on me. That is to say, my monitor has lost signal for a split second, causing the monitor to "wink" at me.

Is this something I should be worried about, or is this a known issue? Is my Maven going bad?

If I had to RMA a G400 MAX... well, that would REALLY suck.

              Thanks for your interest Durango.

Regarding the latter question, I have to check (now I am not at home).

Regarding the former, I have the new (well.....here in Italy it is new) Goldstar LG Flatron 795FT plus 17".

              Thanks again.

No need to apologize. You are confirming my suspect: it'not a monitor problem.

                      Maybe this can help.

If I run Techdemo or Expendable (or any other game), I don’t have any problem.

                      Why? Isn’t it strange?

My G200 sometimes does what IceStorm described too... Usually soon after booting... The screen just goes black for a moment, and sometimes when the display comes back it looks as if it's in a slightly different position... I've only noticed it recently so maybe it's something to do with me having a new powerdesk, and I got a new monitor fairly recently too so maybe that has something to do with it...

                          Daniele,

Try forcing AGP 1x. You can do this using the registry hacks found elsewhere in this section, or a couple of the available tweakers also have this option (I think!).

I'd try to reproduce exactly the way the Vanilla G400 was set up.

Also, my suspicion is that the G400Max, when tested down at the shop, might not be running at full blast. If the machine they slapped it into doesn't support AGP 2x, or Bus Mastering... or any of a number of other things, it would appear to work correctly. Also, the monitor refresh could have something to do with it.

You might have one of "those monitors". And the higher specced DAC of the MAX is having a fit.

Try setting your monitor to 60hz to test THAT theory.

Anyway, keep us informed. You MIGHT have a defective card. It's always possible (and even probable, noting some alarming shortages lately!).

                            Ok guys,

I give you the updated situation:

                            1) Vanilla G400 DH 32 Mb with my computer and my monitor works perfectly. I can set whichever frequency (from 60 to 85 hz) and resolution (640,800,1024,1152,1600) I like. The result is always the same: everything works fine.
                            2) G400 Max 32 Mb DH with my computer (or somebody’ s else computer, it doesn’t matter) and a 14” or 15” monitor (60 hz, 800x600): it works perfectly.
                            3) And now the surprise. G400 Max 32 Mb DH on my computer and my monitor, frequency set to 60 Hz, resolution 640x480 or 800x600: it works fine.
                            4) If I set a higher resolution or I increase frequency, I start facing the well-known problems mentioned in this subject.

Unfortunately, when I stopped this testing (I also followed all the suggestions you gave me, but nothing worked) it was too late for trying to force frequency and resolution on other 14” and 15” monitors.

My theory is that I own a defective Max. If the monitor was defective, it should give troubles also with Vanilla: it’s not the case. It can’t neither be a monitor/card combo conflict: one member of this forum, Gary, has the same combination and he has never faced a trouble like this. Anyway, in few days, I’ll be able to have another Max and give a definite answer.

If my theory is right, I think that everyone Max owner, especially the 14” or 15” monitor owners, had better to test the card to higher frequencies and resolutions: someone could have a defective card without being aware.

If I am wrong (I don’t have a defective card), I think I’ll get crazy.

                            I’ll keep you informed.

                            Thanks again for the cooperation.

Hey guys, I was having REALLY bad lockups. I was at the point I was going to shove this card up someone's orifice, then I happen to notice that I had no lockups till I changed display settings to 16 bit. So, I left it in 256 and no lockups. Tried 32 bit color, no lockups yet for an hour. Tried to go back to 16 and ind=stanly had a lockup. Rebooted and set it back to 32 and lockup free.

PS, yes I fooled with ALL the suggestions, busmastering, disabling ECC, IRQ's, slots of other cards. None worked, but this did.

Daniele, Could it be your SBLive conflicting?

Here's what Dennis1 wrote in another forum, don't know if it helps:

"After days of trying different bios settings on my Abit BE6 with G400 32 DH and sblive including trying different IRQ's, AGP aperture size etc. I solved my problems with the crashings and not be able to run games and more. The problem is not with the hardware at all, but it is a software problem (for Sblive users). The problem is that if you installed in the past Liveware older than version 2.00 (A lot of people) you're toast. Upgrading to Liveware 2.0, 2.1,3.0 is NOT a sollution. Removing of the sblive, disabling device drivers etc is also NOT a sollution. The only thing that works until now is completly removing windows from you're harddisk, reinstall W98, install directX 7.0, install you're g400 drivers, Instal liveware 2.0, instal liveware 2.1 and run that baby .

I don't think that everybody problems are solved with the G400, but for users that are having problems with the G400 and have A Sblive card installed and have used Liveware version older than 2.00 have a good change to solve there problems with above. I tried it on three different computers having problems and solved it. Succes ! -Dennis"
