  • norton anti virus was cuaseing vertical lines

just thought i would let some pepole know. i just finished building a k7 system formy self andd instead of useing mcafee virus scan i used norton. when ever i tryed to shut down my new system i would get dark vertical lines across my screen and the system would lockup i started to think it was a hardware problem but then on one reboot the problem was gone. i then rebooted the system again and once again lockup city. i then realized the only thing i did difrently besides rearanging pci cards to try and change irq's around. was that i had disabled the virus scan software. so i rebooted with it disabled and no problem.
then i rebooted with it on and lock up
then uninstalled virus scan and no more lockups/video problem.

norton virus scan and g400 dont mix (at least the latest version dont mix) oh no problem with mcafee so im going to use that instead.

my system has arived. all together and if i new about the usb bug in 98 with this board i would have been fiished a lot sooner.

    Interesting...

I wasn't having video problems with Norton Antivirus, but it seemed like it was causing my system to take an extra 30 seconds or so to start up (counting the time from the first appearance of the Win98 splash screen until the time the hard disk light goes out and the cursor goes from "wait" to "normal"). I switched to McAfee and got rid of the 30 second wait.
System specs (well, everyone else is doing it!):

    Asus P2B-F motherboard
    Pentium III 450, no overclock
    G400MAX/32DH, no overclock
    256 MB PC100 RAM
    SB Live Value
    Hauppauge WinTV PCI
    ReelMagic Hollywood+
    USR 56K ISA
    Win98 SE

im not sure i pulled it but i think its the latest version. i did all the updates what would happen is when i go to shut down it would try scaning the bios for viruses and crash vertiacl lines.

Hi merchant, I used to see this with my SS7 system. To fix it I just disabled the scan floppy at shutdown in Norton.

You have not followed the correct protocol.
You failed to blame your g400 or win98.
Instead you blame your anti-virus program
This is intolerable! What will newcomer's to this site think!
            Totally irresponsible on your part.
Actually though I've seen anti-virus programs cause complete havoc on systems.
My own(pcCillin 6)wrote a line in config.sys, when it detected via chipsets, that would not allow the computer to shut down.Fun,fun!
McAfee, the other day brought a notepad to it's refusal to boot.
and to make a long story short,I'm glad you solved the problem and hope other's will come to the realization, that, yes other things can screw up your computer, just as easily!
            Good luck!

hey merchant, can you post the specs on your system? a friend of mine has the same exact problem you had and i'm wondering if it's a combination of hardware + NAV that cause this

this is from memory i will check when i get home and edit within 24 hours if it is wrong.

ms6167 mainboard, 1.3 bios. k7500 @ 650 2 nec pc100 128meg drams. maxtro 10g 7200 rpm hard drive 2500+ primary master. cl5x dvd rom secondary master. xitel platnum storm irq 10. 3com 905c tx pci irq 11. g400 on irq 9 usb root is on irq 5. ide controler on 14. com 1 and 2 on. lpt1 on. no device is sareing a irq. power management is off. pnp bios is off. vidieo shadowing is off. bios catchable is on. video catchable is off. dos sound support is off. irq steering is disabled (no miniport driver found for the pci bus)pci bus is set for hardware (defualt setings) usb mouse (logitech mouse wheel)iomega zip plus on lpt1

no isa cards my modem is a ext 56k v90 usr com2 and com 1 has a ch force feedback stick.

sotware loaded in taskbar. vol control, pdesk, freemem pro, iomega watch and drivers, the normal windows junk (fastfind is not installed.) i do use tweakui from the windows 98 cd to tune things up (acording to tweak3d windows98 startup guide) and i use 4 programs to clean the registry reguarly also acording to tweak3d clean windows guide.
plus i use norton utlitys to defrag and check system disk and registry errors regulary after software installs and crashes.
i use a deicated disk catch 200 meg and only have 3 remaining bugs in my system.

1 no miniport driver for irq steering. not really a problem as everything seems to be working fine with no conflicts.

2 i havent tryed the turbo gl driver since resloveing my usb issue, but it was locking up the system within 2 to 5 min. could be becuase im do to do a full format and reinstall as i did not do that when i changed over from my bh6 (posibal other reason it has been noted on another site that useing only two dimms on the ms6167 has cuased lockups in 3dapps, but useing only one or useing all 3 is ok.) don't know if its true have to try it.

3 ( FIXED,FOUND A WORK AROUND)two vxd errors were plageing me randomly (or so i thought so) cdusd.vxd and voltrack.vxd untill i realized i was only getting the error when i booted my system with out a cd in my dvd drive.
cant think of annything else. but this is one fast system and as long as i boot with no problems into windows its dam hard to make this thing crash out again (unless i shut down and get the vxd error on load but who knows this bug could also be becuase i have yet to do a format and reinstall od my windows partiton. witch now that i have all my major hardware concerns worked out i plan to do this weekend.

hope all this info helps and maybe you can help me before i do my reinstall by answering one of my questions.

The following was posted on another forum I follow:

                  ************
I'm a bit virus-shy myself, since I got one last week that caused norton anti-v to crash, and then reset my bios, and re-partitioned my hard drive with the usual results..

well, I thought I'd got a virus, but a computer technician today told me that norton's anti-v can take out a FAT quite effectively by itself. But he did say there's a patch for nortons.. called macafee apparently
                  **********

I suspect that Norton AV v5 corrupted the FAT on my hard disk, but I can't prove it since I've replaced the disk. And that wasn't the only problem I'd had with it. After I initially installed NAV5, it couldn't find its configuration files on boot. Once I got that fixed, it couldn't find its virus definition files. However, it had no trouble doing LiveUpdate.

NAV4 crashed my office system twice during installation, although it seemed to work okay after that. OTOH, several other Norton utilities we tried using (most notably, the Installation Guard), were serious disasters.

I used to trust Norton above anything, but I will no longer risk my equipment or my sanity. Now I trust Mijenix.
