  • sweet spot at 800x600 w/G400-TV + UT?

i have been playing Unreal Tournament at 640x480 on my G400-TV since the demo/test debuted. while tweaking and trying different settings last night, i noticed that 800x600 feels smoother than 640x480.

i put my settings all back to what they were and then alternated playing a few minutes in each resolution.

as much as it makes ZERO sense to me, 800x600 was consistently smoother and definitely felt like i was achieving higher frame-rates.

    my system:

    G400-TV
    PII-266 o/c to 300 (weak)
    128MB SDRAM
    AOpen AX6BC mobo
    Diamond MX300
    DirectX7 (latest)
    PowerDesk 5.30

has anyone else experienced this? its like there's a sweet-spot at 800x600 in UT or in the card/drivers.

(depending on the response this message generates, i'll come back with some hard numbers.)

I find that it's better on 1024. IMHO.

    800x600 was just too grainy.

I don't know that 800x600 is SO grainy. Anyway, in some games (and maps) 1024 is great. In others, that beautiful image looks kind of like a high speed slide show at 1024. 800x600 seems to work perfectly in every game and map though, for me.

I was even able to make a Cox cable tech's eyes pop out of his head last evening. He'd come over to install their digital telephone service, and was in the house waiting for the test call. While he waited, he watched me playing a round of UT. He asked what card it was that I was using. When I told him, he seemed shocked. He said he has dual V2-12's, and this looked as smooth as those, but much sharper.
Who knows, maybe he'll end up with one now.

With PD5 Resolution Manager I´ve created a custom 960x720 resolution, and for me that´s an excellent compromise both visuals and speed. UT and Q3 are both very smooth at 960x720x32 bit and better looking than at 800x600.
