What will i need to do to clock my G400 32 meg agp non-max to max settings?
You'll need more cooling for the chip, i hear. The difference between a MAX and a reg G400 is very nice. On a recent set of Benchmarks a G400 MAX was 3rd fastest, Next to a GeForce and Savage2000. While the G400 was the pretty near the bottom. this test had TNT2 Ultras, and v3 2000 - v3 3500's. The improvement from G400 to MAX is very drastic in this benchmark.
Wanna have some fun, ask people to show off their G400 cooling setups. It gets very interesting. : )
Overclocking the vanilla to max specs will give you a big boost. I've benchmarked my system with overclocked CPU and G400 versus no overclocking at all and the results are fairly dramatic (see sig). You'll notice the much higher FPS on the individual tests as well from an overclocked G400, holding CPU constant.
Instead of starting yet another thread on cooling, you might like to check out this recent one first. As you'll see in this thread, a 486 fan is fine, but may require screws and such. http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum5/HTML/006070.html
There are tons of "cool" pictures.
I have a 5" fan blowing in to an open case. I haven't had the need for extra cooling on the card yet as it runs fairly stable. However, I'm about to get the Crystal Cooler (no screws or hassles) and/or the Card Cooler one of these days.
The consensus is that MGA Tweak is the way to go. You can get typical overlcock settings on a few of the other threads. I'm lazy and am using the Matrox Tweak. I'm likely going to switch to MGA Tweak once I get more cooling set up.
The G400 Max has faster memory than most vanillas. There are Max rejects with the faster memory that are sold as vanillas, for those lucky few. Anyway, you typically won't be able to overclock a vanilla too far beyond Max stock specs, if at all, unless you do something drastic, I guess.
Just a warning though, I think someone on this board did fry his card when he screwed up one setting on MGA Tweak. I don't recall if he was ever able to get the card operational again.
Ahh, the joys of overclocking... someone should write a book.
Good luck !

Well I have G400 SH32M clocked with that Matrox-tweak utility to 120 % ( mga tweak shows ~152 core and ~202 mem) and I have attached only a 486 fan to heatsink... havent got any probs yet, but i clocked it yesterday so lets wait and see if anything happens...
But I think nothing (bad) will happen, because I have tested my card several hours with 110 % and 115 % without any extre cooling and my card was rock-solid ...
And results (120 %) were quite good my fillrate increased from 207 to 250 (3dmark max99/ 800x600) , think that's not bad with cel400@500...
