  • G400 banding problem

I've just bought my G400 and have got it installed. Everything works like a dream with one exception. Whenever I play a game that doesn't exist in a window eg Quake 1.08, UT Demo, I get a black band running down the right side of the screen. The images on screen seem to be justified to the extreme left edge of the screen. The band is about 1.25 inches wide and runs the entire length, top to bottom. System setup is as follows

    Asus P2B rev 1.02
    Win98SE
    G400
    D-link Nic
    SB X-Gamer live
    GVC 56k Modem

The problem seems to happen in 32 or 16 bit color at all screen resolutions. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?

    Thanks

I could be somewhere way out in leftfield, but are you playing games in different resolutions than your desktop? If so, did you set the correct display settings (like refresh rates) for the resolutions you play games in?

It sounds like your having an alignment problem.

Paul, thanks for the reply. I've just noticed that I get the band as well when I switch my desktop to lower resolutions. Do you know of anything I can do to fix this or is it my monitor ADI Microscan 5V.

      thanks

I suspect you just have to set the refresh rates to something your monitor likes. This can be done in Windows Display Properties.

Right click on your desktop. Click on Properties. Display Properties will pop up.

Click the Settings tab at the top right.

Click the Advanced button on the lower right. Towards the bottom, there should be an area for Refresh Rate. This is the control. Most likely it says "Optimal."

Don't change anything yet. Instead, click on the Monitor Settings tab. In the upper right hand corner, it should give your current refresh rate. Mine says, "Current refresh: 85 Hz." *Note what this is.*

Click cancel and go back to Settings. Change your desktop to the resolution and color depth you play games in. (You'll probably have the option to reboot or just keep the new settings. Do what you're comfortable with.)

Once your desktop is set to your gaming resolution, click the Advanced button again.

        Click the adapter tab.

Again, the refresh rate is probably going to be "Optimal" or "Adapter Default." You might have to do some experimenting here.

My monitor likes all the resolutions I us--1152x864, 1024x768, and 800x600--to be at 85 Hz. I suggest clicking the arrow in the Refresh Rate area and manually selecting the refresh rate reported when you checked your monitor settings at the desktop resolution first.

Your display will shift, for the better or the worse, and Windows will ask you if you like the new settings. If you don't like what you see, tell Windows you don't and your old refresh rate will return.

Experiment if you have to, but don't select a refresh rate your monitor doesn't support at the particular resolution you are in.

Once you find something you like, select it with it and Windows will remember it the next time your in that resolution.

Matrox has rather sophisticated, customizable refresh rate controls, but I think you should get used to the Windows controls before you use it.

        Good luck.

That was it!!! Thanks Paul. I had to manually set the refresh rate at each resolution instead of using optimal. Quake and UT now load perfectly centered at the various rez.

          thanks
