Yeah, baby! More proof that Win2K sucks!

I could have told you that Win2K sucks.

      WARNING:

DO NOT install Microsoft Windows 2000 on any computer that has unsupported hardware. If you hardware manufacture does not have drivers specifically written for Win2k, you will not get it to work. NT and Win9x driver do not work in Win2k unless you get hacked versions of the drivers ( http://www.ntcompatible.cjb.net/ ).

I found this out the hard way folks.

As for the OpenGL/Windows thing. Saw that coming. M$ probably started the venture to steal OpenGL trade secrets to use in D3D and then dump the deal. Typical M$ strategy. It was a good idea, but SGI and M$ have very different business strategies.

I don't think W2K by itself sucks, but gamers and companies being dependent of DirectX (read: MS) cannot be a good thing.

          Whow,

this thread has a really anti-microsoft kind of thing to it.

Let's see: Win2K sucks because your hardware doesn't work correctly with it, because Win2K in itself isn't yet released and your hardware manufacturer hasn't released drivers for that not yet released operating system.

Sorry to say, but this kind of reasoning is stupid.

I'd have to agree. This has nothing to do with Matrox Hardware.

Since Ant is very intent on keeping things on topic, and in the proper forums, and named me his deputy to assist in this task, my first offical task will be to place this thread in the Soapbox forum. Please pick up the conversation there.

I agree- I don't think Fahrenheit has anything to do w/ Win2K in particular- it was never slated to be included in the initial release of Win2K. And, Fahrenheit would have been included in the consumer versions of Windows too (Win9x, WinMil, WinNeptune etc...) since it's for gaming as well as apps.

Anyways, I expect the Matrox driver developers will have a huge sigh of relief when they hear this news- one less API to support!

Hope they're hard at work cranking out those Win2K DirectX 7 and OpenGL drivers....

If they're not ready by RTM in a couple of weeks, I expect to see a download ready to go at midnight Feb. 17 on Matrox's FTP site!

Aaa??? Since when do you let an O/S supply your Drivers? For a Video card? This means that Matrox will have to Write drivers for W2K. Duh .... Whats different here? W2K will work with Opengl. If Matrox writes the drivers to support it. Oh wait I guess that W2K is not supporting Glide either?? Get it?

IceIceBaby: "this is more proof that w2k sucks" ? Say what wilis? W2k never had fahrenheit support to begin with, and w2k's "non-suckiness" has nothing to do with a 3d api.

I tried asking politely to take this one to the Soapbox (the home of off-tipc threads).

I even copied the thread over there earlier.

I wanted to aviod locking any threads...but Ant wants this place on topic...so...CLINK
